Assistant Principal's Report

Deepening our Whole School Approach to Reading.

At GWPS, we pride ourselves on our world class curriculum, designed to maximise the precious learning time we have with our students at school.  Our Whole School Approaches (WSA) are developed around frameworks, designed help our student become readers, writers and mathematicians.

This year, we have been working on deepening our WSA to Reading, by collaborating with teachers and students to redevelop our CAFÉ menus.  CAFÉ is a term we use to reference our WSA to reading, with reading strategies categorised under the four concepts of ‘Comprehension,’ ‘Accuracy,’ ‘Fluency’ and ‘Explanding Vocabulary.’  Previously, all students have worked of the same set of reading strategies in a single ‘menu.’

This year, we redeveloped these strategies to create a bank of age appropriate strategies, so there is diversity and challenge in their personal reading goals.  Instead of one ‘menu’ of strategies, we now have seven ranging from Prep to Year Eight.  We are currently trialing these new menus, gathering student and teacher feedback, to help us better understand their needs and how we can improve these menus even further.

We look forward to sharing these menus with you when they are finalised and put into place as part of our newer, deeper WSA to reading.
