Ethics

5D has been exploring ethics through different perspectives and learning about how different things can be impacted with ethically made decisions. 5D has begun to dig deep into ‘what would you do?’ situations. We listened to a short and curly podcast and found out about the choices we make and how it impacts us.

One example of ethically making decisions, is thinking about the food products we consume every day. A lot of products have palm oil in it. Getting palm oil involves the destruction of orangutan’s habitat. Many acres of land get cleared when making these forests. So, it’s best that we don’t get food with palm oil. We also learnt, it’s not as easy as it seems. There are a lot of sacrifices and consequences. Not only is it rare to find, but it is also more difficult to receive. So, what is the ethical choice? Do you continue eating and using your favourite products? Or will you sacrifice and give it up? We’ll let you guys decide on that. We have collected student voice, and asked people about their thinking of the challenging, harder more expensive but sustainable choice or the other choice, that cheaper, easier choice, what would you do? Why would you do it? Let’s find out.

‘I am aware that many of my favourite products contain palm oil, but i don’t want to give it up, I try to help without giving it up by eating it less frequently and as a time-to-time snack. I am also aware of the palm oil that is inside my of my day-to-day products, and I try to keep sustainable in other ways.’ - Toranda

‘I would give up my favourite food, which is pizza, to keep sustainable and stop using unsustainable products in my items. I would do it so the future generations will still be able to live an earth that’s undamaged. Also, I would do it to save animals’ - Shafin

5D applies ethical thinking in the classroom by…

‘I constantly am striving to make sure I am making ethical choices and thinking, by not just worrying and benefiting towards me, but also my surroundings, thinking in terms of the facts of the situation, consequences, thinking of the results and impact for other people’ - Seyara

‘I show ethics by making right choice and thinking about other people’s thoughts while they work’ - Joshua

The dictionary meaning of ethics is the ‘moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity’ How similar is 5Ds thinking and the dictionary meaning! These strategies and thoughts are incredibly important to ma classroom and used in many everyday situations.

Ethics, to the 5D learners, is the consideration of the choice, decision and impact. Ethical choices are important, when making decisions and influences. The important part is, what we think it is and how we show it. The right or wrong of decision making, the importance and why we do it. Overall, ethical thinking in 5D is expressed in many ways and in this article, we’ll tell you all about it.
