Head of Middle Years

Mr Steven Tkaczuk

As the term, and the 2022 academic year, begin to slowly come to an end, I would like to thank each of you for your ongoing support to enable Middle Years to flourish. It continues to be a vibrant, diverse, inclusive and positive learning environment where students are able to grow academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our dedicated staff who take on many hats throughout the course of the year, to support and help grow our students in Middle Years. Their high work ethic, professionalism and ability to respond to varying situations is not only appreciated, but a true blessing to our College.

For those of you who are beginning a new journey in 2023, we wish you every success as well as a positive and safe transition on your new adventure.

Finally, may each of you have a wonderful time with your families and friends during the special time of Christmas.

Mathematics Awards

APSMO Mathematics Olympiad is a regular Mathematics Competition at Good News Lutheran College. The competition consists of Junior Mathematics Olympiad (designed for Years 5 and 6) and Senior Mathematics Olympiad (designed for Years 7 and 8). It is specifically designed to stimulate and challenge student’s problem-solving mathematical skills. This year students were invited to a select entry test based on the PAT test results and prior experience. There was an enormous response and we ended up with 50 students competing for 30 spots in each competition. The 30 students selected had practice sessions every Wednesday and Friday at lunch where they collaborated to answer questions from past test papers. There was a 5 question test every month from March until September and the students did a total of 5 tests.

Congratulations to two of our Middle Years students: Krishav G who achieved the highest Individual score in the Senior Mathematics Olympiad and Mayan N was the highest scorer in the Junior Mathematics Olympiad. The College was also ranked in the top 25% based on the student scores. What an amazing achievement for these two students as well as those who took part in the competition!

We look forward to further enhancing the mathematical skills of our students through more competitions next year.

It is always great to acknowledge the varying interests of our students. Recently, we had two students from our College, Arjun (Yr 7) and brother Aadarsh (Yr 5), represent themselves and our College at the 2022 School Sports Viktoria National Cricket Championship. This is a huge achievement for the two boys who are extremely passionate about the sport.

When interviewed by a major a major media outlet, they spoke not only about their high achievements, but were very quick to speak about their positive experiences here at GNLC.

Aadarsh’s team - Victoria Whites - won the National Cricket Championship for 12s and Under, winning the gold medal, whilst Arjun was among the highest run scorers in the tournament and was noted as ‘top in Victoria’.

Well done to our both Arjun and Aadarsh for their brilliant achievements. We look forward to viewing the articles and to perhaps watch you both play one day on the world stage!
