Junior school excursion to Moonlit Sanctuary

On Tuesday, 22nd of November, the Preps, Year One and Year Two students went on a wonderful excursion to the Moonlit Sanctuary in Pearcedale. The students arrived at school very excited, and there were many discussions about the animals they would see.

We boarded the bus, and took a short bus ride to the sanctuary. When we arrived at the sanctuary we were greeted by the Zookeepers. Our first activity was getting close with different kinds of reptiles and learning about the characteristics of a reptiles and their adaptations to remain safe from predators. The students had the opportunity to touch Gramps the Shingle Back lizard, a Bearded Dragon and Crystal the Diamond Python.

Despite the rain and wind, we set off on the Wallaby Walk. The Wallaby Walk was a very interactive experience for the students and a great chance for the students to get up close to the animals. On the Wallaby Walk the students we given food and they could feed the different species of kangaroos and wallabies. The kangaroos and wallabies were very friendly and gentle when eating the food from the students' hands. We even had the opportunity to see a Wallaby Joey poke its head out from it's mother's pouch. The joey was very inquisitive and was staring at all the faces looking back.

After lunch we went taken on a guided tour of the sanctuary. During our walk we saw Tasmanian Devils, Dingoes, Koalas, an Emu, Wedgetail Eagles and Mary the Wombat. The students were engaged throughout the day and they asked great questions to get more information about the animals.
