Transition

It is that time of year again that we start to prepare the children to move up in the world. We put a lot of emphasis on the transition from Kinder to  Prep and from Year 6 to Secondary school, but it is just as stressful for children to transition up the school, into their next year level. Changing teachers, classrooms, friendship circles and academic expectations are all worries that every child has at differing levels.

Here are some things that SFX does to minimise the anxiety around transition and help to prepare for next year:

  • Social Stories for students who require it
  • Meet the Teacher session
  • Teacher handover of information to 2023 teacher
  • PSG meetings for students who require additional support
  • Parent Teacher meetings after academic reports are released, upon request

What you can do at home:

  • Reassure your child that change is a good thing
  • Remind your child about how wonderful our small school is and everyone knows each other
  • Have play dates over the summer holidays
  • Talk openly about your experiences with change and how is makes you feel
  • Use the Zones of Regulation chart to help them identify how they are feeling and discuss strategies they could use to regulate their emotions

We also start to experience tiredness at this time of year. There is a lot happening on our social calendars and school is increasingly busy as we wrap up the year. You may be hearing that your child does not want to come to school. This is a very common statement in most households as we approach the end of a term. Below is a graphic that has some useful statements that you can use to respond to your child's

Jersey Day

On 8th November, the whole school raised awareness and understanding of organ donation and transplant. We all wore our favourite sport jersey and participated in a range of activities including:

  • Design your own jersey
  • Jump rope and skipping to feel how hard our hearts work
  • World Transplant Games video and 'Olympic style' games
  • Organ poster to identify which organs can be donated

GARDENING CLUB

We were very successful in receiving a grant from Woolworths and Landcare to support our vegetable garden and sustainability systems.  We have purchased the following items:

  • Two worm farms
  • Compost bin
  • Two small greenhouses
  • Compost benchtop bins for every classroom
  • Soil
  • Fertiliser
  • Seeds
  • Seedling trays
  • Seedlings and shrubs

Our wonderful gardeners are very busy preparing our garden for the new planting cycle. On wet days, they have been engaged in planning and preparing initiatives for 2023 when we plan to harvest our herbs vegetables for the cooking club to use, cultivate seeds from our plants and establish seedlings for sale to our school community. They also spend their time making creative pieces from nature, such as bird feeders and the beautiful tea light candles seen in the photos. The students collected leaves from our garden; how clever!

A very big thank you to Miss Sue who spends many hours every week overseeing our garden and assisting our junior gardeners.

Massive thanks goes to Elroy (1/2T) who collects the compost bins every day, feeds the scraps to the worms and collects the worm juice to feed our garden. He is super dedicated to this job and is very reliable!
