Moonlit Sanctuary

On Tuesday the 1/2K students along with 1/2T and the Preps, visited Moonlit Sanctuary. The children were very excited in the morning to experience one of their first excursions and bus trips. The children discussed some animals they would see and where they would be located in the sanctuary using the park map prior to leaving.

Once we arrived the children moved into their first activity. We were taken on a guided tour of the Sanctuary by one of the friendly Zookeepers who showed us some amazing Australia animals up close including a Tasmania devil, dingoes, koalas, wedge tail eagles, wombats and an emu. The children were very fascinated by the information and fun facts. One of our favourite facts was that when a baby koala is ready to eat gum leaves they have to eat some of their mum's poop to create the right bacteria in their stomach to digest the leaves. We even got to touch and smell some koala poop.

Our second activity was in the education centre where the children were able to see and touch a shingleback lizard, a water dragon and a snake. The children were intrigued by the ability of these reptiles to camouflage into their environments. The children were extremely confident in answering questions and demonstrate their knowledge of reptiles.

Finally we took a walk down the wallaby walking track. The children were able to take small handfuls of food and try to feed the wallabies, kangaroos and birds along the trail. The children learnt the importance of moving low and slow in order not to scare the animals as they approached.

Even though it was a cold wet day the children had a fantastic excursion. The children engaged in discussions and questions with the Zookeepers and learnt lots of new and interesting facts about the animals, their features and their habitats.
