Week 6 Update

The halfway mark of Term 1 has arrived and it certainly has been busy. A huge feature of this term so far has been our focus on the school values and learner qualities. It has been brilliant to witness the explicit teaching of our values and learner qualities in every classroom. Students and teachers will continue to build shared understandings and language surrounding our Aiming High initiative.

This is a really exciting journey and we have a number of next steps that we will be working on in collaboration with all stakeholders to implement. The ultimate goal is a clear understanding of what a successful learner is at LNPS, and how to get there.

This week we began Learning Conferences in the revised format based on feedback for students, families and staff. The new format aligns with our focus on School Values and Learner Qualities. It also builds on the next steps from the previous year's Written Report in English and Maths.

The key underlying principles of these sessions are to ensure:

  • Families know more about what their child should know and be able to do (learning/goals)
  • An opportunity to share learning strategies and  knowledge about your child
  • Strategies to support your child's learning/goals at home.

The initial feedback from students, families and staff have been extremely positive.

Late last year Jaymee Martin our Aboriginal Education Teacher and our Aboriginal students collaborate with Scott Rathman from Rusted Tin - Contemporary Aboriginal Arts (the artist behind our shipping containers) to design an Indigenous school polo. Scott and the student meet on a number of occasions to work through a concept and design. We are now able to release the concept.

The idea behind the design is connections -  community, school, each other.

We are really excited to be able to add this polo to the school uniform. We are hoping it will be available mid-next term.

This term we have also been working on an Acknowledgment of Country video to be used for school events.  Thank you to the students involved. You have done an amazing job on the video.

These are two great actions towards our Reconciliation Action Plan.

Finally, today is International Womens Day (IWD). IWD is a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

The theme for IWD 2023 is #EmbraceEquity, aiming to promote discussion worldwide surrounding the concept of equality and why equal opportunities aren’t enough. Equity isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have. A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA and it's critical to understand the difference between equity and equality.

We can all truly embrace equity. It's not just something we say. It's not just something we write about. It's something we need to think about, know, value and embrace. It's what we believe in, unconditionally. Equity means creating an inclusive world.

Please play your part and actively support and #EmbraceEquity
