CONGRATULATIONS TO BLAKE MITCHELL

Hi, my name is Blake Mitchell and I'm currently in Year 12 at Vermont. During the summer holidays, I represented Victoria at the Under 18 Australian Youth Championships in Blacktown, Sydney, in baseball. I am very lucky that the school has decided to help contribute to the financial costs of my trip, and I am fortunate enough to be able to share my recent experience in Sydney with everyone!

About me and my previous experiences within Baseball.

I was lucky enough to be born into a family that lives and breathes baseball, therefore I have been playing and watching the sport since I can remember. I play at Forest Hill in winter and Melbourne in summer, and am currently playing in our Division 1, Senior 1's team trying to win the flag, which would be a huge milestone if we were to succeed.

I've played in my fair share of representative teams growing up, although this was my first time being able to represent my state.

My aspiration within the sport is to go to college in the USA to play baseball after I finish school, as I believe that will develop me into the person I want to be when I'm older.

I was so honoured to be selected in the team back in October but knew that we had a lot of work to do if we were to achieve our goals of winning the trophy up in Sydney.

As part of being selected into this team, we had training in Altona 2 or 3 days each week, on top of my club training and games.

This was combined with schoolwork and my part time job that I was trying to juggle at the same time! As you can tell, life got busy!!

I was so thankful to have my parents and family there to support me, as I couldn't have done this without them.

How the Championships went,

In the lead up to the tournament I was super nervous, having never played at this level of baseball before, I was going up against some of the sport's most promising athletes for their age. It was scary, but I took the challenge on. Victoria ended up winning bronze, defeating NSW in the Bronze medal match.

This was a great effort to win a medal, although we all felt we missed out on the glory of gold. I was selected in the team as a pitcher, and statistically had some of the best numbers across the whole competition.

I had an ERA of 0.83, 11 strikeouts, 4 walks, 6 hits and only gave up 1 run across the 8.1 innings that I pitched. I pitched against Queensland twice, who ended up winning the gold medal.

For myself, this was an incredible achievement, and one that I was very proud of. Most importantly though, I got to represent my state, and enjoyed myself while doing it.

I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my ongoing journey, to my teachers, staff, parents, family, coaches, friends and anyone else who has contributed even just slightly, it means everything, so thank you. I hope this is only the beginning!

- Blake Mitchell
