0ne-two-rful 1/2s

Term 1 Week 2 2022 - Friday 24th February

What have we been up to?

It’s been a busy start to the school year but all the students have risen to the challenge. Together students have created their class mission statements and written their WIGS (Wildly Important Goals) which they have started working towards.

The last two weeks have seen students embrace the Little Learners Love Literacy Program which has become a much-loved way to start each day. In addition to this, students have been learning all about what ‘Good Readers Do’ and developing their skills to choose an appropriate book to read independently. The 5 Finger rule has helped students work out whether a book they want to read is at the right level for them. In Writing over the last two weeks, the students have been developing their understanding of recount texts and building their knowledge of language features including nouns, adjectives and verbs. Students have also been working on using these language features in combination to write descriptive and interesting sentences. Over the last couple of weeks students have been learning about skip counting patterns and how these strategies can be used to count collections of objects more efficiently. Last week, students also began their new Science Unit which involved everyone going on a safari in the yard to discover the wonderful animals and creatures that inhabit our school. Students have continued learning about their brain and the amazing things it can do. They worked on strengthening connections in their brain to learn a new skill by practising that skill regularly. We’ve also enjoyed continuing to build our knowledge of the AUSLAN language and students have enjoyed using the AUSLAN alphabet to sign different words to each other.

Here are some photo highlights from the fortnight that was!

1/2A – So many students wrote and practised speeches to present so they could be voted 1/2A’s Student Lighthouse Team Representative! I’m so proud of every single one of them! If you weren’t successful this time, please keep trying 😊

Congratulations Edie D! You’ll make a wonderful representative for Semester One!

1/2B - We have been learning Auslan and learning how to sign the alphabet, our names, colours and emotions.

1/2C

What is coming up?

Reading

Over the next fortnight the 1/2 students will continue to develop their reading fluency by enacting what “Good Readers Do”. They will also learn how to sequence a story and build their understanding of what the purpose of the author and the illustrator is.

Writing

Throughout the next two weeks in Writing students will begin writing their own examples of a Recount text; first in partnership with the whole class and then moving towards writing their example independently.

Maths

Students will spend the next two weeks working towards trusting the count. This is an important foundational skill in maths that helps build the students’ confidence in counting collections, adding collections of items together and working with larger numbers.

Inquiry & Science

In the coming two weeks, students will continue to build their understanding of how their brain works by investigating the nature of right and wrong and working towards outcomes that are Win-Win.
