Visual Arts

Last week in Visual Arts, all students worked on the art elements of line and shape. Foundation students were introduced to different types of lines, such as straight, horizontal, diagonal, curved, zigzag, wavy and spiral. Using these ideas they were able to draw different lines, using oil pastels and water colours, which creates the resistant effect to create a paper carpet line art piece. Year 1/2 students began to explore the artist Paul Klee, using bright vibrant waters colours to make the square block effect for background inspired art piece. Next lesson students will be able to draw a portrait of a person or an animal using a black marker. Year 3/4 students began to create a collage, by cutting and pasting facial features from a magazine, then using a black marker to make lines to construct a complete face. Year 5/6 students began to explore flat 2D shapes, texture and proportion/balance, where they used cardboard pieces to create a textured portrait art piece.

Culture Studies

This week in culture studies, students were able to understand that Italy is in Europe and that it is in a shape of a boot. All students began to understand the meaning of the Italian flag and what each colour means and represents, green is for mountains and hope, white is for snow capped Alps and faith, red is for the blood spilt for Italy’s independence and charity. Foundation students pasted mosaic paper squares to make the Italian flag, whereas Year 1/2 students coloured the flag and 3 to 6 students were able to colour & label the flag. Years 1 to 6 students made Italy’s national flower, the white lily out of paper. All students began to explore famous landmarks around Italy, focusing on the leaning tower of Pisa, the colosseum, and Vatican City. This allowed year 3 to 6 students to have an in depth-discussions about the unique landmarks.

Interschool Sports

The start year has seen our 5/6 students along with three grade 4 girls participate in Teeball for term 1 interschool sports.

The first week was no game and in week 2 we had a bye, which gave the students 2 weeks to practise.

Week three saw our first game against another school. We played against Cheltenham PS. With so many students at the moment and only one sport, we had a boys and girls team vs Cheltenham and a 3rd game amongst ourselves to allow these students to develop their confidence and skills of teeball.

It was a great day of competition. The boys started with a rush and got an early lead 14-5, but a comeback from the opposition saw us lose a tight game 18-17. They boys did extremely well and it was played in great spirits.

The girls had a fantastic start to the term winning 18-7. Every girl got home at one point and Zara hit a home run.

The sportsmanship and team work by every student in all games was amazing. Keep it up.

Student Vs. Teachers Lunch Time Games

Each week, teachers will play a year level in a game at lunch time. We started this week with our first competition with the teachers taking on the grade 5/6 students in Dodgeball. It was great fun with all students trying hard and the rest of the school coming along and cheering for the grade 5/6’s. I can confidently say that the teachers dominated the game.

A fun activity that everyone enjoyed. Next week the teachers will take on the grade 3/4 in a game of dodgeball.
