Fabulous 5/6

Grade 5/6

Term 1 Week 4 2023 - Friday 24th of February 2023

Message from the Teacher:

The kids have made a great start to the year and have brought a positive attitude to their studies over the last couple of weeks. We have started tee-ball, received leadership badges, and taken up leadership positions around the school.

The term is really getting started academically now as well and both classes have settled down into our Term 1 units. We have explored writing creative narratives, improving our understanding of what we read and began to understand the value of different numbers. We have also created skill-based groups for Maths to help us target areas of need, along with the 3/4 cohort, and it has been positively received by all of the students.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be helping the year 5’s prepare for their NAPLAN testing by conducting a number of practice tests. I also encourage you at home to have a chat with your child about the upcoming testing to help them understand it and prepare for it. If you need some resources to help with this, please contact Sam or myself.

 Learning intentions:

Reading: Over the next few weeks, students will be introduced to the skills they will need to be successful readers, the expectations for reading in Grade 5/6 and how to select appropriate texts. They will also work in the library and ensure they are reading every day. We are learning comprehension techniques, such as the ability to infer meaning when we read.

Writing: In writing, students will be moving onto how to write persuasive texts that share a point of view. We will look at powerful language and how word choice can affect your writing.

Mathematics: During week 5 & 6, students will be working in their focus groups on their areas of need.

Inquiry: We will be exploring Governments and Leaders and how these vary around the world. We will be looking at what makes a good leader and how countries differ in their beliefs and systems.

What have we been up to?

Hi, my name is Hugo, and I am a leader in Public Speaking and Writing, and I am Jake, and I am a leader in Sports and Maths. In the last two weeks in 56A, we have been doing lots of different things in and out of the classroom.

In Inquiry, we have been learning about different governments in history, for example Ancient Rome, Medieval England and France around the time of the French Revolution.

In Maths, we started our Maths groups together with the 34s. In my Maths group, we are learning about Place Value (Hugo), and in my Maths group, we are learning about decimals (Jake).

In Writing, we finished off our 7 Oaks stories in which we created our own characters and a problem that had to be solved. My character’s name was Raptor, a werewolf (Hugo), and I wrote about Jake, the dog (Jake).

Last assembly, our new school leaders got their badges from Nick Staikos, which was a great honour.

On Friday morning, we had our first tee ball game against Cheltenham Primary. The boys team started off smashing, but Cheltenham made a good comeback and Le Page sadly lost. The girls played amazingly and won and showed great team spirit and sportsmanship. The Reserve team also had lots of fun. Mister D went last and made everybody have a home run.

This week, we also played dodgeball against the teachers during lunchtime. The teachers won, but next time the students will be victorious! Go kids!

Thank you for reading and have an amazing and fantastic weekend.
