Year 12 English Mainstream viewing the play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’
On Wednesday 8 February, the Year 12 English mainstream classes viewed a notable performance of Shakespeare’s play ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. Shakespeare’s play is a brilliant comedy set in 16th century Italy, and students were able to unpack the many ideas relevant simultaneously to the play’s context and contemporary society, such as love and marriage, trickery, social expectations and crime. By watching the play performed on screen, students were given a useful opportunity to further visualise and understand the ideas and conflicts present within ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. While watching the play, students were encouraged to take notes of their observations, such as the effect stage directions have in the play, how individual actors interpret the original character from the script and the language of the play. This was also an opportunity to develop Year 12 students’ skills as active listeners and as an audience, being able to understand and think deeply about the ideas presented in the play and link the ideas to modern-day contemporary society. Overall, the viewing of the play was an amazing and refreshing way to enhance students’ understanding of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.
Thank you very much to the English team, specifically Mr Mahalingam, Mr Bird, Ms Tchantcho and Dr Schroor who arranged this event and sacrificed their time to make sure the Year 12 students had an excellent and enjoyable learning opportunity.
