Adapting Ui

With Lockdown 6 arriving centre stage from hidden wings, the cast and crew of this year’s Senior School production of “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” are putting the final polish on the show by script reading via Zoom!

Meanwhile, the Black Box has been impressively transformed to host 1930’s gangsters, gunmen, politicians and jazz clubs in the hope of a live performance after lockdown.

With audience capacities heavily restricted, the current aim is to perform three shows to the families of cast and crew. Hopefully, restrictions allow for a performance to be filmed, so that a digital presentation of Ui can be shared.

Should the current COVID-19 restrictions ease, tickets will become available for general purchase, and there are many fingers and toes crossed for this eventuality.

The Performing Arts industry has been one of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and students and staff have endured long periods of uncertainty and disrupted rehearsals. In true Girton spirit, as much as possible is being done to give students involved in the show an experience akin to professional theatre, including the production of the much loved “banners” (pictured below), which will grace the Black Box foyer.

Our tireless Head of Drama, Mrs Mandy Ellison, recently told her cast and crew that if there is one thing to come of the struggle that they have faced, it is to recognise the vulnerability of various industries, including the Performing Arts, the strength that comes from struggle, and the support for the Arts in the community and our own school.
