YEAR 7

Statement of Inquiry: Change can only occur within the boundaries of our culture and society.

This term Year 7s have been investigating musical storytelling. Through the umbrella inquiry statement, students have been researching and exploring the cultural significance of storytelling in bringing about change within society. To this end, they have focused on the 'Concept’ album, in which each song/piece is unified by a theme or story. Students have researched and analysed them in order to create their own. Each student is busily developing and creating their own song as part of the Year 7 'Adventure' album.

YEAR 8

Statement of Inquiry: The expression of identity underpins health and wellbeing.

Y8 student describes his working space as “a really groovy spot to sit", and we agree!

It is well known that dance and music have a special relationship that has not only inspired much composition but fosters health and wellbeing. There has been no better time than now to focus on this. Our Year 8 music students have been researching this age-old musical genre through the statement of inquiry. They have discovered that, not only does dance and music have a long history, but a culturally significant one too. Dance music is at the heart of many cultures and is an important form of national and cultural expression of identity. Our Year 8 musicians are taking their new knowledge and are creating their own dance music using Soundtrap. We can't wait to hear what they produce.

YEAR 9 (collaborative project)

Statement of Inquiry: Genre communicates to audiences’ alternative ideas about identities and relationships.

Students have been working on a collaborative project incorporating all the Arts. Through the statement of inquiry, students have been working in small groups to produce their own sci-fi film. In music, they are working to develop science fiction soundtracks to accompany these films. Due to current COVID restrictions, this project will continue into next term.

YEAR 10

Statement of Inquiry: Identity is underpinned by personal interpretation and competency.

Our Year 10 musicians have been investigating what drives their musical passion. Through the statement of inquiry, students are fostering the skills to be able to identify their own strengths and interests and are developing a portfolio reflective of this. Students are analysing works, practising their instruments to improve their practical skills and are collating a portfolio of performance recordings that include compositions, adaptations and performances. We are very much looking forward to hearing the music from this highly skilled group of musicians.
