Year 3 News

Mrs Smith

This week, we have been doing reading and writing activities based on the book “How To Make A Bird” by Meg Mckinley and Matt Ottley. The book is about a little girl who makes a bird. It comes to life and she sets it free.

Snapshot writing:

Here are some fabulous examples based on the part of the book where the bird is set free. The class had to use strong adjectives, interesting verbs and their senses to describe the scene and could choose to write from the perspective of the little girl, or from the perspective of the bird. This is the illustration we used for inspiration:

Alexis

The girl was courageous to let the bird free and she knew it was the right thing to do. The bird looked at the feathery, creamy clouds, as it felt nervous and happy about soaring through the sky on the bright, colourful horizon. The bird was free at last!

Henry

There was a beautiful sunset as the bird was just about to be launched, the atmosphere was amazing with puffy clouds everywhere.

Rhys

I can hear the wind blowing. I’m about to release the bird that I made. The yellow sun is shining brightly on the horizon. The compact woolly clouds are blocking the view of the ground. I can feel the cool air on my face.

Cataleya

The magnificent yellow and orange sunset starts to fade away as the bird disappears into the distance. The bird flaps its big crumpled wings and the majestic white fluffy clouds start to disappear under its wings. The girl smiles as the bird is free.

Alyssia

The little girl put out her hands and released the bird into the baby blue sky with silky clouds. The little bird spread her wings in the air. The bird could see big fluffy, silky clouds in the sky and all the other birds flying past her.

Amelia

The bird flies on the brightly lit coloured clouds, in the perfect breeze in the sky. It’s like the air is victory! You feel like it’s as great as winning a trophy. When you realise it, you feel powerful.

Writing and following a procedural text

We are now writing our own procedure describing how we would make a bird, using recycled or found objects and materials. Next, we will be testing out our procedure by making the bird we have described. Here are some of the birds that have been created already:
