Wellbeing
Mrs Forbes and Mrs Davies
Dear Parents,
So much is being said about anxiety during this challenging time in our lives, and especially the anxiety being experienced by children. Understandably, counsellors and psychologists are being swamped with new clients of all ages as unfamiliar restrictions are being placed on our interactions, movement, schooling, work and everyday lives.
Anxiety is challenging enough without a child believing that there is something wrong with them. We don’t want children developing anxiety about having anxiety!
Anxiety is a normal response that everyone experiences at times.
In this week’s Wellbeing session with the Year 3 and 4s we looked at the purpose of ‘anxiety’ as a protection mechanism designed to keep us safe.
Just as a ‘smoke alarm’ may go off without discriminating the extent of the danger eg. burnt toast’ and we react by running out of the house, our ‘thinking’ brain, or Pre-Frontal Cortex may ‘flip its lid’ when The ‘Amygdala’ or alarm bell in our brain alerts us of perceived danger.
Yes, sometimes our system sets off false alarms, but often this anxiety can be controlled with simple techniques, including practising Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is, noticing: Mindfulness helps us to:
Our thoughts Strengthen the brain so that we feel
What our body feels like calmer
What our ears are hearing Keep our stress low
What we can see Learn better
Anything else that is happening Feel happy
around us now Make good choices
Care for others
Mrs Davies will be welcoming students from all levels to Rainbow Club from next week.
“You are invited to join in for a relaxing and fun session where we can put away the work books and engage in fun activities and topics”.
A light hearted way to connect with others in our community and spend time together!
