Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI)

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) at Monash University on an EEI project. My EEI focused on testing my injecting efficiency in knocking out (deleting) a gene for Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) in zebrafish. I worked hard for months to conduct background research on the mechanisms of CRISPR (CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats and is a gene editing tool recently discovered by researchers) and to plan my experiment. Recently, I was able to conduct my experiment over a period of 2 days.

In these 2 days I was able to create a CRISPR microinjection mix, set up zebrafish tanks for breeding, collect and sort embryos in petri dishes, inject embryos with the injection mix, and view my observations under a microscope. Apart from conducting the experiment, I was able to take a tour of the facility and view the various marine life including the African Killifish, the epaulette shark, and devario malabaricus.

Below are some of the highlights of the days:

This was an extraordinary experience that I will never forget, which allowed me to pursue my passion in genetics.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Denney, Mr. Chisolm, Mr. Van Veen, Dr. Rossiter, The Lab Technicians, and ARMI for their support with this project. I would not have been able to have this opportunity without them.

New Year 11's begin at JMSS

The new year 11's of 2022 have begun their JMSS journey.

They have all commented on how much they are enjoying the school and how involved they feel already.

Thank you to all the staff and students who made them all feel so welcome.
