R U OK?

Dear IPS Community,

Yesterday the Premier made announcements that there will be changes to restrictions in Regional Victoria.  For the time being, there is continuation of remote learning under current conditions in metro schools.

The government and dept of education have stated that they are not yet in a position to make a decision about Term 4 for metropolitan schools, but as soon as they do I will communicate that information to you.

Currently In Regional Victoria, Foundation to Year 2 students can return on site from this Friday, as well as Year 12 students (and any student undertaking a Unit 3/4 VCE subject, plus final year VCAL, can return on site, so Year 11 students can return to onsite for those VCE Unit 3/4 studies).

Fingers crossed that as vaccination rates go up we are more likely to return to IPS onsite for Term 4. I look forward to seeing how Regional Victoria manages their partial opening from tomorrow as that may provide some learnings for us.

Planning Day

To ensure we are best prepared for any scenario, Tuesday the 14th of September will be Ivanhoe Primary School Tune-In Tuesday!  Teachers will spend the day planning for Term 4. What does this mean for you?

This day will have a wellbeing focus, where students will be provided with a host of activities to choose from (many of these will be off-screen).

9.15am - 9.30am  - students will connect to their class teacher for the roll and morning check-in.  Teachers will explain how to access and complete the choice of activities.

Students will select their preferred activities and complete these throughout the day.

Where possible, students should be encouraged to get plenty of fresh air and exercise. Perhaps look for some Wally's (There will be 30+ fresh ones in Ivanhoe).

As all teachers will spend the entire day planning for Term 4 there will not be any feedback on student work this day.

Wally update

Fresh new Wally’s have been sighted in Bond, Stortford and Ford streets. Also  on the Darebin side of Oriel Rd; as well as Probus St and Langs Rd (closer to the school).

Let your teacher know where you find them.

Regular Wally = 10 House Points,

Gold Wally = 20 House Points,

Wally photographed with student and emailed to ivanhoeprimaryvic@gmail.com  adds 5 extra House Points and gets your photo in the newsletter.

A FAIR update

Cat Atkinson, Fair and Class Rep Coordinator has a message for the IPS Community on how we might make some changes in response to the pandemic. You can direct any questions regarding the organisation of the Fair to Cat at climbatree1@gmail.com

A message to all students from the Italian Program.

Senore McKay, Signora Harrington and friends thank you for your persistence!

Don't forget to check out the Specialist pages in this newsletter.

National Integration Aide Week

Last week was National Intergration Aide Appreciation Week. We want them to know that we couldn't manage without their support.

They are often the unsung heroes phoning families, helping students get online, putting together resources for individuals as well as supporting teachers in their role.

Thank you!

Year 6 Camp - in case you missed the news.

More great news. I am thrilled to be able to report that we have been able to find an alternative to the cancelled Canberra Camp. The team have worked tirelessly to source an alternative that provides an engaging program. It is in Victoria, is cost effective and at a time that will fit with other critical aspects of the Year 6 program. E.g., Secondary transition and Graduation.

The school believes the camping program is an important part of the curriculum and the Year 6 experience (particularly as these students missed out last year).

This year's Grade 6 Camp will be held at Murray Life Adventures Camp from the 29th November to the 3rd of  December 2021.

Indigenous Literacy Week

Wednesday  21st of September is Indigenous Literacy Day as a part of Indigenous Literacy Week. Please take some time to explore the Indigenous Literacy Resources attached below.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge closes on the 17th of September. Here at Ivanhoe Primary School we will be closing it off on the 16th of September to give us time to verify all the books. So please make sure you add your books by the end of Thursday 16th of September.  Thank you for your participation.

Junior School Councillors

Mrs Wright and I will hold an online meeting of the JSC tomorrow afternoon. If your child is a semester 2 JSC representative their teacher will provide them with a link to a 2.30pm meeting tomorrow (Friday) afternoon. There will be a similar meeting of the Environmental Leaders organised shortly. Stay tuned.

Capital Works update

The current capital works program is nearing completion and I am delighted to be able to report that by replacing the majority of windows in the Waterdale Rd building we have improved ventilation throughout the classrooms.

The roof repairs will stop the leaks we have dealt with in heavy weather over the years.

The re-pointing of the brickwork and external painting with give the hostoric building a well overdue facelift.

A really exciting update is there is just enough grant money left over to repaint the walls of our beloved library and five upstairs classrooms. This freshen up work lifts school pride and re defines the tone of some otherwise shabby learning spaces.

The school is looking fabulous and we cant wait to have everyone back onsite!

Vacation Care Program

OSHClub intends to run its holiday program at IPS these holidays. The program is attached but please contact OSHClub on 1300 395 735 for details relating to potential pandemic closures.

Tips

As part of our commitment to learning catch up and extension there is now  a page dedicated to tips to help your child learn. Not all will be relevant to your child or your circumstances, but if you find just a few ideas to help you help your child engage with their learning then it will have been worth it.

Finally

Today was R U OK? Day - Dress Up in Yellow!

THIS YEAR THE MESSAGE IS: Are they really OK? Ask them today.

Do you know how the people in your world are really going?

R U OK? Day  is our National day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs.

Life's ups and downs happen to all of us. So chances are someone you know might be struggling. Your genuine support can make a difference whatever they are facing, big or small.

So, don’t wait until someone’s visibly distressed or in crisis. Make a moment meaningful and ask them how they’re really going.

Are they really OK? Ask them today. Your conversation could change a life.

Have a great day!
