SPORT TERM 2

Sport wrap up term 2: First of all, I would like to thank all parents and guardians for their contribution this term. We understand the responsibilities of consenting for sport especially when there have been so many days out this term. Our consent rate this year is an incredible 97% which is absolute credit to all of you for being on top of this. It has also been great to meet many of you out at sport, this has been something many of our staff have mentioned and enjoyed, it’s great to have so much connection between parents and our college sport program. We love acronyms in sport just as we do in education. Here is a short explanation of some that may pop up on events and compass communication: SPD or simply named on an event Year level then the sport  eg: Year 8 Soccer: This means district sport where students compete against schools in our local district (Dromana, Mornington, Somerville, Westernport, and Rosebud). The cool kids will just call this “district.” SMR sport:

This means regional sport where students compete against schools in the southern metropolitan region. These tournaments are for individual students or teams who have won their way through the previously mentioned district tournament. The cool kids will call this one simply “regionals.”

Cross Country:

I’ll move straight to SPDcross country as I’ve already covered our school results. Down at hastings foreshore we saw some real cross country weather as students battled the elements through the 3km and 5km courses. We had an incredible turn out with over 60 students represent the College on the day with a further 35 students going to compete at the SMR level next week. Congratulations to all students for a huge overall result where we finished second, amazing for us with roughly half of the population of many of the other schools. Special mentions for the following students: Rufus Curtain 2nd place overall U/13 boys. Hunter Stephens 1st place overall U/15 boys. Jackson Jones 3rd place overall U/15 boys.

Jess Taylor 2nd place overall U/16 girls.

Aaron Hagland 3rd place overall U/16 boys.

Special mention also to the U/13 boys' team who came first overall in the team result.

Year 7 sport: Another real winter sort of day for SPD year 7 sport. Some fantastic results to mention with our year 7’s setting a cracking standard, dominating the SPD format in many different areas. Well done to all of our students who participated, results were as follows: Soccer:

Boys/mixed: A: 1st place overall (A team will compete at SMR next term)

B: 5th place overall.

Girls: 2nd place overall.

Badminton:

Badminton: Boys/mixed:

Intermediate sport:

The coming together of two really strong year levels saw some consistent results across the board. Even the sun peaked through for a rare appearance during winter sport which was nice for teachers and parents in attendance alike!

Soccer:

Boys/mixed:

2nd place overall.

Girls:

1st place overall (Will compete at SMR next term)

Badminton:

Boys/mixed:

3rd place overall.

Girls: 1st place overall (A team will compete at SMR next term)

Boys Football:

3rd place overall, were unlucky not make the final where there was a real chance for a win!

Girls Netball:

A team: 4th overall

B team: 4th overall

I would also like to give a quick mention to the senior girls, who competed at the basketball and netball tournaments early in the term. Although both results didn’t go our way, it was great to see senior girls competing and setting a great standard for the younger students to follow as participation rates do drop in senior sport.

With over 16 sport events completed this term and still arguably our biggest day to come on Tuesday of the last week of term, I would like to congratulate not only every student who has participated but those who attended try outs and gave things ago through the sport ed program and your classes. This is an integral part of pushing a higher standard through the program and your efforts are important to us regardless of whether you make the final team or not.

Thanks again for everyone’s support, two to go then a fair bit of sleep to follow! Cheers,

Marcus Roberts – Sport Coordinator

BADMINTON

On Tuesday May 30th, the year 7 girls and boys badminton teams went to Mornington Secondary College to compete in the Southern Peninsula division badminton competition. All students represented the college brilliantly by displaying excellent sportsmanship and improving considerably throughout the day. Due to a high level of involvement we had to split the boys into an A and a B team. The A team were undefeated and now go on to compete at the next level of competition.

The girls also progress to the next round due to a lack of competing teams on the day.

Good luck to both teams.
