Human Powered Vehicle

EMC Racing Team

This year we are looking to establish the EMC Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) program to complete in the Victorian HPV series and the Energy Breakthrough event with the support from students, parents, sponsors and the college.

A Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) event consists of a team of 8 students pedaling their HPV around a closed circuit. Races range in length from 6 hours to 24 hours duration. Race events are held on weekends at various locations (see race calendar below). 

Round 1 of the Victorian HPV series is the Casey 6-hour race held on Saturday March 18th at Casey Fields Criterium.  

 

What is a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV)?

A Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) is a recumbent trike within an aerodynamic fairing. Student HPV teams work together on improving designs, construction, and maintenance of their vehicle. Safety of vehicles is scrutineered prior to each event and students MUST wear protective equipment when riding. 

HPV events are races! Trikes can reach speeds of up to 60km/h and collisions do occur. Students will participate in range of training sessions to learn safe racing and riding techniques, how to maintain the vehicle, design concepts and physical fitness training. 

 

Joining the HPV team

Joining team involves a large amount of commitment from both students and parents. Most of our activities occur out of school hours and include weekends. This requires parental support, the level of which varies and can include the following: attendance at information and event preparation sessions, marshalling at race events, transportation of students, preparation of food/catering for events, building/maintenance of equipment and HPV trikes, weekend day and overnight camping/supervision, and fundraising and sponsorship communication and activities.
