HUMANITIES ELECTIVE: Beyond Borders

Year 9

What is the subject about?

Time to get out of our bubble, to start looking beyond Australian borders and explore the world. Beyond Borders is a Humanities elective where students investigate global destinations. Through the lens of tourism, students will learn to better understand the history and environments of different tourist destinations which inspire our interest in these locations. They will then analyse the impact of tourism, including businesses that have been established to capitalise on the human desire to see the world.

“In Beyond Borders you learn about different countries, cultures and the importance of tourism. It has helped me understand the sustainability of a place which then help me reflect on my actions. You get to do a lot of research about the countries you like and want to visit in the future which I have enjoyed.”

Skills you will develop

  • Explain the characteristics that make a place a holiday destination.
  • Analyse data, maps and other geographical information to develop informed conclusions and predictions for the future.
  • Analysing environmental systems and changes due to human action.
  • Explore the economic and environmental impacts of tourism and how they affect people .

  • Tourism sustainability field work report.
