Strength and Kindliness

Parish Mass Reflection

On Thursday 30th March, the Year 12 students along with their Foundation Buddies attended a Parish Mass in St Augustine’s Church. Before attending the Mass, the Year 12 cohort decided the theme should be friendship, based on the new relationships forming with their younger buddies.

Throughout the Mass, a number of students took up a range of roles from speaking to bringing forward symbols.

Many songs like ‘You’ve got a friend in me’ were also played to link in with the theme as well as origami butterflies, that were made as a symbol of friendship, exchanged at the conclusion of our Mass.

Afterwards, the Year 12 students invited the Foundations back to the Tolle Lege to enjoy their recess and continue developing our relationship over snacks, dancing and exploring the new space.

“I enjoyed giving my buddy her butterfly, a symbol of friendship from me to her.” - Tess Laidlaw, Year 12

“My favourite part of our Mass was speaking in front of the Foundation students as well as my peers.” - Allanah Kour, Year 12

“Father John Paul commended our students attentiveness and participation in the Mass.” - Kylie Morrissey

As we enter Holy Week, we continue to reflect on the lives of people vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice and how we can respond through supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal.

Your generosity is the pebble that allows Caritas Australia to create the ripples that will improve the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, supporting them to flourish and create opportunities for future generations to live to their full potential.

Thank you!

Be a Good Egg this Easter

Did you know that much of the chocolate sold in Australia is made using cocoa beans picked by children, many of whom have been enslaved or forced to work in exploitative conditions? The International Labour Rights Forum estimates that more than 1.5 million children are working in the cocoa sector in West Africa, where about 70% of the world’s cocoa is produced.  We can all be ‘good eggs’ and commit to using our Easter chocolate dollars to buy slavery-free chocolate. It’s also the right time to tell our families, friends and communities about the exploitation of children in chocolate production. Look for Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance logos on your chocolate wrapper.

Download the Be Slavery Free Chocolate Scorecard! to find out what's really going into your chocolate and how your favourite brands rate.
