On Friday the 28th of February our mighty team of 6 swimmers compete at the annual SSV State Swimming Championships. From the get-go the day was filled with good vibes; including top tier karaoke on the drive in, rave music before marshalling, and most importantly an abundance of support between the students and teachers (Miss Malander & Miss Unal) as a unit.
King of the Pool (Josh C year 12) proved his excellence in the water (again), banking majority of the school's points on the day. Josh was awarded with 2 individual gold in the U20 100m backstroke, the 400m freestyle, and rounding it out with a bronze in the 200m individual medley. We’d like to thank Josh for his extensive contribution to the school's swimming success over the years, and the way he inspires us all to reach for our goals!
MackAttack (Mackenzie E y12) also played a pivotal role in demonstrating true Vermont spirit in her first and final SSV state swimming event. Her leadership, commitment, and fabulous media/vlog production across the day empowered her peers with confidence, belief, and hunger for new personal bests and great relay times. Couldn't have done it without her!
To Josh and Mackenzie, thank you for your years of swimming service representing Vermont Secondary College. We salute you and wish you all the best for your future aquatic endeavours.
The U17G 4x50m freestyle relay (Lucy, Cherise, Annika, Millie) came away with 4th, and a 4 second personal best from state finals the previous year! The 16-20G 4x50m medley relay (Cherise, Mackenzie, Lucy, Millie) also showed promise, improving from their qualifying time at regionals and placing 7th.
Cherise Ncube (yr11) came away with two bronze medals in the 17yr 50m fly, and 50m freestyle as well as providing significant contribution to the relays on the day. Lots of success!
Most importantly, we all extend our immense gratitude to Miss Malander who holds the essence of Vermont’s sporting greatness in her every action. Every year she goes above and beyond to not only support our participation in school sport, but fosters a wonderful team environment creating memories that we shall cherish long after high school. From driving us back to school at 5:45pm out of city traffic (in the dark, cold, and rain), supreme morning pre-race nutrition, and post-race nutrition we couldn’t ask for a better mentor to remind us of the beauty in the sports we play, and why we do them in the first place. And it shows! Out of 156 schools Vermont Secondary College placed 20th from a mere 6 students competing! (placing higher than many schools with bigger budgets, swimming pools, and regular team training). Ultimately, it's about the culture around you that manifests true success and teamwork, and to that I say there's no better place than Vermont.

The Coles Bowls Academy (CBA) embarked on its 3rd year in the EMR Bowls Competition. After a series of trials and training sessions, the students displayed a great deal of enthusiasm and motivation to compete for the College. On Wednesday the 26th of April, the weather was superb and it was a successful day all-round for our students and the 10 teams competing on the day. The most pleasing aspect for the competition was the fantastic sportsmanship and passion displayed on the day by our students.
The senior team of Lucas H, Ollie W & Kai T (Yr 10) fell short at the final hurdle and were beaten by Doncaster SC in the Grand Final. In the junior section, all teams were in the running to progress through to the state finals on Tuesday the 9th of May. The winning junior team consisting of Jake H (Yr 7), Jack C & Jack H (Yr 9) kept their composure in the Grand Final, with a gallant effort from Finn H (Yr 9), Rani S & Aiyden C (Yr 7) taking 2nd place. Thank you to the Heatherdale Bowls Club for their continued support of the CBA, and we look forward to many students continuing with this great sport for years to come!

Well done to the Intermediate Baseball team who trained hard prior to the event last Thursday 27th April. The team had a mix of both year nine and ten students who displayed the Vermont values in their performance on the day. The pitching was fantastic with some outstanding new talent emerging in Nisith A, equally as impressive was the effort of James G behind the plate as out catcher on the day who recorded more than one out at home plate and blocked almost every ball that came his way! Unfortunately, our best effort was not enough to help us advance to the next level, but your coaches Ms Arthur and Mr Malpeli could not be prouder of the effort on the day! We encourage all of the year nine students to join the team next year and the year ten students to consider joining the senior team next year! Thanks for a great day out team!
The intermediate girls played really well going two wins and two losses. The girls played well despite their captain being away. Taya C and Tori B stepped up and pitched for the team as the captain was away. Unfortunately, the girls did not advance to the state, however their teacher was extremely proud of their effort and sportsmanship. I encourage all students next year to try out for softball next year!
The Senior Baseball Team came into the EMR finals full of confidence having played together for many years prior. With the bats alive and some impressive fielding, Vermont SC got off to a great start with a win in our first game against Ringwood SC. Unfortunately, this winning streak did not last long as we were beaten by John Monash Science School with their pitcher throwing very well and therefore keeping our bats quiet! From this point forward, we were hopeful of finishing our final games strongly and this was illustrated by stellar performances against East Doncaster SC and Balwyn High. Finishing 2nd in the region, our students were more than competitive throughout the day and all played an important role whether that be in the field or with the bat. Fortunately for this group, we have been invited to the State Finals on Tuesday the 23rd of May at Cheltenham Baseball Club.
