Year 8 News

Vermont Secondary College

Welcome to the start of another term. We trust that families have read and reflected upon term one reports and have put an action plan in place for further improvement. Year 8 Geography classes have been involved in Field Work at Blackburn Lake. Here are some reports from students:

Esther 8M4:

On the 31st of April, 8M4 and 8H1 went to Blackburn Lake Sanctuary to conduct our fieldwork. We started off our day listening to a presentation from the Environmental Officer who informed us about the history, development and future of the Sanctuary. After the presentation we were guided by sanctuary volunteers who showed us around the sanctuary. At different points, we stopped and discussed as a group about how things got there, what their use is, and what we can do to protect and restore various parts of the sanctuary. Back in class we have now begun to report on our findings and complete sketches, reports and compile relevant data.

Maggie 8M4:

The students from 8M4 and 8H1 went to Blackburn Lake to explore the question is Blackburn Lake more of a natural or man made landscape. It was a full day excursion where the students where split into groups and toured around the park by the park’s leaders. They explained the history and the heritage of the park and how it had changed over the years, as well as how it was currently managed. The students were given in depth explanations on the importance of the parks history and managing the flora and fauna of the park. Throughout the day the leaders explained how far the park had come over the years from the 1930 till now.
