Les Bâtons Français Visit

Year 8 French students were treated to a live theatre performance from Les Bâtons Français on Tuesday morning. In a whirlwind tour through French history, students were introduced to some of France’s most notorious characters. From Napoleon’s height issues to Louis XVI’s desire to be popular, from Joan of Arc guessing Charles VII’s favourite colour to Joseph Guillotin defending his humanitarian values – Les Bâtons Français mixed culture and comedy and gave Horrible Histories a run for their money!

Harmony Day

Harmony Day was held on Friday, 21 March and is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world.  By participating in Harmony Day activities, we learnt and understood how all Australians from different backgrounds equally belong to this nation and contribute to its diversity.

Harmony Day was celebrated at Frankston High School with a Sausage Sizzle and the sharing of many traditional desserts, all from different cultures.  All the international students and the SLC celebrated this day and were able to create new friendships and to nurture an understanding of each other’s background and culture.

Collectively it was a lovely day, thoroughly enjoyed by all the teachers and students.

Thank you so much to Miss Toovey, Miss Long, Miss Lyons, Ayesha Van de Brink of Year 12 and a special thanks to Breanna Savage of Year 11 for all the bread!

Year 7 History Incursion

On Thursday, 20 March, the Year 7 History classes were treated to a truly “hands on” learning experience about ancient cultures.

The students enjoyed two sessions, one about the clothing and lifestyle of ancient civilisations and the other about the weapons and armour used. Civilisations such as ancient Egypt and Rome were covered. While dressing several students in period costume, the presenter of the lifestyle session described what daily life was like in ancient times. As the other presenter was providing information during the session on weaponry, students were again able to be dressed in the armour from the ancient era, as well as handle some of equipment used.

There was a very authentic feel to the incursion, especially with both presenters being adorned in period costume. The students felt that they were stepping back in time and found the experience a very engaging way to learn.

Sharing Cultures

On Monday, 3 March three of our Chinese students; James Yuan of Year 10 and Koraly Han and Michelle Yu of Year 9 9 visited Benton Junior College in Mornington.

At the college they study Chinese and the students were very enthusiastic about a visit from three Chinese students. Our students talked to them about China as a country and then individually James spoke of sport (he is a keen basketball player, and the primary school students were very impressed with him), Koraly spoke about food; the pictures of Chinese dumplings made us all very hungry, and Michelle spoke of Chinese festivals. The New Year Festival where you wear new clothes and have a clean house to welcome the upcoming year sounded a great idea to most of us as long as we were not the one’s doing the cleaning of the house! The Frankston High students then took primary classes through eye exercises (performed daily in Chinese school classes) and a series of morning stretching exercises. Also in the 50 minute sessions they instructed the students on how to write their name in Chinese.

It was a great experience for everyone involved and the Benton Junior College Chinese teacher; Mrs Yan Ma, was very impressed with the presentation. On the way back to Frankston High School, James asked me “When are we doing this again?” I was very proud to accompany these three students who represented our school and their own culture so well.
