Term 2, Week 2

Welcome back! We are almost at the end of Week 2 and our Grade 5/6s have hit the ground running.

Upcoming Events:

Week 4: Monday 15th May - Grade 5/6 Melbourne Excursion

Week 5: Monday 22nd May - Senior School Athletics Carnival

Week 5: Wednesday 24th May - Pupil Free Day

Melbourne Excursion:

The Grade 5/6 excursion to Melbourne is on Monday 15th May (Week 4). All students need to be at Bendigo Train Station no later than 7.30am. We encourage students to bring an additional snack, as we will be arriving back to Bendigo between 6-6.30pm. Please refer to the Compass event post for all additional information.

Writing:

During Writing in Weeks 1-4, our students will focus on creating Persuasive texts. Our students have been focusing on the finer details of creating a convincing Persuasive text, such as developing effective paragraphs, using interesting and appropriate connectives and building detail in their writing by expanding noun groups.

Reading:

Students have been introduced to our new Reader's Notebook novel - Midnite by Rudolph Snow, a story of a wild colonial boy. The novel ties in with our new Topic unit, where students will explore important Australian historical events. Within the first two weeks, students have been exploring their understanding of making predictions about the text and adding their own ideas to the supporting evidence. In Weeks 3 and 4, students will develop their ability to ask questions throughout the reading process and use evidence from the text to support their answers.

Mathematics:

This term, Maths will have a strong number focus, to help strengthen core number skills. As well as this, in Weeks 2-4 we will explore the topics of 'Chance' and 'Data Representation'. In 'Chance' students will undertake several Chance experiments and analyse the outcomes. In 'Data Representation' students will pose questions, collect data, represent their data in graphs and interpret the results.

Topic:

This term, our Topic unit is titled 'Museums in Motion'. Students will build their understanding of specific events in Australia's history, and in small groups, will depict a moment in time by creating a diorama. This will culminate in an end of term 'museum', where students will present their event and diorama to the younger grades in the school.

STEAM:

In STEAM, our students will be working in their year group cohorts. The Grade 5s will develop their ability to create a stop-motion animation. They will explore the use of webcams, lighting, effective storyboarding and working within a group to create a short narrative using stop motion technology. The Grade 6s will deepen their robotics skills, by building a 'battle-bot', which will culminate in a Sumo-Bot battle challenge at the end of the term.

2024 YEAR 7 TRANSITION INFORMATION

Last week, all Grade 6 students received their Placement Forms as part of the transition program into Year 7. We would like forms returned to school by tomorrow to allow time time for them to be scanned and collated, so that we can compile requests and respond to relevant schools within the allowed time.

Next Wednesday, 10th May, all four government Bendigo Secondary Colleges will be holding their Information Evening for families. It's a great idea to regularly check your relevant secondary school website to keep up to date with information, to ensure that you don't miss out on any events or opportunities they may be offering.
