Year 5 & 6

Ms Hall, Ms Riolo, Ms Armstrong and Ms Hicks

Hello 5/6  families!

We have been working extremely hard so far this term and are so excited to share our learning with you.

Literacy

In reading the 5/6s have been focusing on the authors Jackie French and Margaret WIld through an author study. Whilst reading these texts they have investigated how visuals can help us as readers as well as using other reading strategies such as inferring to help analyse these texts on a deeper level. We have also looked at sentence structure and the different types of sentences that can be found in various texts. In writing the students have been focusing on biographies. They have explored this by looking at well known influential people in our society. This then led us to following the complete writing process and writing our own biographies on a peer in our class.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been focusing on using efficient strategies when solving multiplication. We have looked at arrays, repeated addition and vertical multiplication. The students have then had an opportunity to apply these skills to help them solve open-ended worded problems. We have also been investigating different types of data and how to represent this data through graphs. We posed questions, collected data then turned this data into different types of graphs.

History

In history, we have explored how the first fleet came to Australia. The students investigated important events such as the gold rush and how these events have impacted the way Australian society is today. Students wrote diary entries from the perspective of either a police officer, digger or trooper from this time.
