Year 2 May Newsletter

Hello fabulous families of our Year 2 students,

Term 2 is in full swing and we are seeing so much progress from our students. They have been working very hard to adapt to our new way of teaching and the progress we have seen has been wonderful!

Literacy

In Literacy, the students have been enjoying our new literacy block. This has included phonemic awareness (rhyming, syllables, phonemes), Little Learners Love Literacy, oral language, handwriting, writing and comprehension strategies.

For phonemic awareness, otherwise known as Heggerty, the students will be continuing with their understanding of rhyming words, however will be challenged by producing a word to match the provided example. They will continue with breaking words into syllables using their ‘chopper’ hands however will deepen their knowledge by segmenting words into the phonemes (sounds) each grapheme (letter or letter combination) makes.

We will be continuing with our Little Learners Love Literacy program, moving onto the last of our Stage 7.1 phonemes (sounds) of –y, /igh/, /ie/, /-y/ and /oa/.

Students will continue with their progress through the handwriting unit, moving onto letters and numbers including o, O, q, Q, 3, b, B, p, P, 4 and e, E, s, S, 5.

In Writing, we will be continuing with our understanding of sentences including periods (full stops, question marks and exclamation marks), topic sentences and separating clauses using commas. Below is an example of what our writing slides have looked like - can you figure out which period belongs at the end of which sentence?

Numeracy

In Numeracy, the students have been enjoying our new EDI lessons. They have adjusted nicely and are eager to show their understanding through turning and talking with their partner and worked examples on their whiteboards. Below is an example of what our new EDI slides look like.

Over the next few weeks, our Year 2 students will be beginning to consider area and length. They will have the opportunity to measure both area and length using informal methods, i.e. what is the length of an iPad using paper clips as a unit of measurement? Following this unit of learning, students will be exploring calendars, months and seasons.

History

Moving forward, our inquiry sessions will now be known as ‘Unit’. For unit, students have been exploring how technology has changed and how this change impacts our daily lives. We began by thinking about changes in the school setting, including how the internet has changed what learning looks like. Here is our venn diagram comparing olden days learning versus modern schooling.

Boggle!

Using our Stage 7.1 sounds, write as many words you can using the graphemes (letters or letter combinations) below! How many can you think of in 1 minute?
