Learning in Foundation

What a busy term it has been so far! The Foundation students have continued to show our Gilgai Plains values of Kindness, Zest, Learning Together and Respect. Students have demonstrated clear expectations when following their morning routines. We have been doing lots of assessments for Semester 1 Reports and it is so wonderful to see all the growth and progress our students have made since the start of the year!

Literacy

This Term we have begun to use a Phonological and Phonemic Awareness and program called Heggerty in our Literacy lessons. Through daily practice students are developing their decoding and encoding skills. Students practise blending, segmenting, syllable recognition and manipulating words.

We have been exploring different comprehension strategies such as visualising, retelling and making connections during reading. All students have shown zest when building on our letter and sound knowledge with our Little Learners Love Literacy program. So far we have learnt all Stage 1 and 2 sounds (m, s, f, p ,a ,t ,c ,i ,b, h, n, o, d, g, l, v) and students are building on their segmenting and blending skills to read and write words. We are now up to Stage 3 sounds (w, r, e) and are getting closer to celebrating Milo’s Birthday Surprise. More information about this exciting event will be posted on Compass soon.

Numeracy

Students have been focusing on adding small groups of numbers together. Students have been using lots of manipulatives such as dominos, counters and bundling sticks to show that when we put two small groups together it creates a bigger number.

We have also been learning about 2 dimensional shapes such as circles, rectangles, squares, and triangles. Students have been looking for these shapes in our classrooms and school and have been sorting everyday items into the different shape categories.

History

This Term students have been learning about their personal history and significant events as well as what life was like in the past. We have been discussing what makes our families special, and in the world our families have come from.
