SMCC Board

Hello St Mary’s Community,

May is a very exciting time for the College. Not only does it bring cool autumnal weather for us to enjoy, but it's also the time each year that we throw open our doors and arms at our ‘Open Night’. A night when we showcase our college community to the greater Cairns community.  We are truly blessed as a community to have a vibrant group of student ambassadors who make us all proud as they tour families around the most beautiful campus the Diocese offers.

May is also when the school offers enrolment places to our 2024 Grade 7 cohort. During our meeting this month, Principal Kerry Manders outlined the exhaustive process that has been undertaken to make these offers. I, for one, was astounded by the diligence that St Mary’s brought to this extremely important task. As a Board, we offer our congratulations to those families that receive offers on Friday and our heartfelt commiserations to those whom we will not be able to welcome to St Marys.  This is one task that I do not envy each year.

The Board has been briefed on the processes the school uses when students are struggling to align with the behavioural requirements of the school. This is a very serious situation, and we were pleased to see the thoroughness and support offered during tougher times. We all know that school is not always an easy place to be, so it was reassuring to know that every attempt is being made to support our children towards their futures.

The Board would like to congratulate and thank the new leaders who have stepped up to new roles this year.  It is wonderful for staff to have opportunities within the Diocese and other schools. This rewards those individuals for their efforts and gives our 'up and coming' leaders opportunities to lead within our community. It is always a joy to see people who have assisted in your child’s development, receive the kudos and reward they deserve.

Finally, at the recent board meeting, we were given a glimpse of some exciting new changes coming to the College this year. These changes make things more comfortable and easier to manage for students and families alike, so watch this space!

Yours in service,
