Kitchen News

From Erin & Kristen, Kitchen Specialists

Year 4 students have worked so diligently throughout term 1 in cooking. This final fortnight saw students preparing and enjoying rainbow sushi and pumpkin and honey bread topped with a cream cheese icing.

Sushi

Sushi requires students to cut vegetables into long thin strips and then spread sticky sushi rice onto the seaweed wrappers. The rice is then topped with their rainbow of coloured vegetable sticks. Rolling up the sushi is often a new activity for many students, and they all managed really well. Once the sushi was rolled, students enjoyed eating their rolls with their teams and trying some quick pickles they also prepared.

Pumpkin & Honey Cake

We finished the term with a kitchen favourite, pumpkin and honey cake topped with cream cheese icing. This cake is deceptive as many students claim to dislike pumpkin until they try this cake. The cake oozes with delicious smells and taste of spices including nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. The cake batter includes some slow oven baked roasted butternut pumpkin, which is sweet, healthy and provides moisture for a lovely texture the students love. Preparing the icing is always a winner activity. Once prepared (with a few licks of fingers in between) the icing is then piped on top of their cakes and decorated with some edible flowers. A perfect way to finish our term in Year 4 cooking.

Knife Licenses

An extra special part of Year 4 cooking is the awarding of student knife licenses. We are so proud of you all and the skills you have learnt and practised throughout the term. We encourage students to display their licenses on the fridge, or somewhere in the kitchen at home and to jump in and start helping out more in preparing family meals so that they can practise those bear claws, tunnel/bridge and rock and chop knife skills.
