9 NEWS Visit

9 News Visit @ LNPS

Last week LNPS students were lucky enough to have Channel 9 come in and talk to us about themselves and how 9 News works. Brenton Raglas and Kate Collins spoke to us about the “Behind the Scenes” of news making and a little bit about themselves. Behind the Scenes 9 News has about 90 workers that make the news that we watch on TV everyday. It was really interesting to listen to Kate and Brenton. After school Chelsea came to present the weather and some LNPS students got to be in the background of the broadcast.

T17 was chosen to have a look at the broadcasting van and have a go at presenting to the camera. When we were presenting Kate was holding an iPad that had our script. She put a small earpiece in our ear which we could hear the people in the news van. The people in the van counted down so we knew exactly when to say our part. Brenton was in the news van showing his group how everything worked. It was interesting to see all the little video screens and how the van was connected to Channel 9 in the city. While we were broadcasting Kate said that they were not recording us, to help us get over our nerves, but when we watched the news that night some of us were lucky enough to be on the news reporting on camera.

Isla, Taylor, Sophia and Sienna got to interview Kate and Brenton, asking questions about what had inspired them to become news anchors. This also gave us the opportunity to practice our own questioning and reporting skills. We are now inspired to continue being the LNPS News Reporters!

Isla - What challenges did you face, when you decided you wanted to become a news reporter?

Kate - To do really well in school and focus on English and to try my best in that subject. Make sure you try really hard in University. Being in the right place at the right time was important for me, I went and volunteered for work experience and Channel 9 asked me to stay on. It is important to strive to do your best.

Taylor - Why did you want to be a news reporter?

Brenton - I was involved in the fire service in the country. My dad was involved in fighting the Ash Wednesday fires. I then got involved with the fire service and got really interested in the weather. I followed my passion which was the fire service, then the weather, which opened the door for me to present the weather on tv, and then I finally became a news reader.

Sophia - When you were younger did you always want to be a news reader?

Kate - No I wanted to be an archeologist. Over time my passion grew in English.

Sienna - What inspires you about your work?

Kate - Meeting incredible people in our community. We have so many people who achieve wonderful things. We are so lucky here in South Australia that we have lots of inspiring people here.

Brenton - We have so many unsung heroes in South Australia. We have a doctor that spends all his days working in the ER, that spends is recreational time as a cave diver. He happened to be instrumental in the rescue of the Thai soccer team. He is an everyday hero, making life better.

The LNPS News Reporters on behalf of the school community would really like to thank Channel 9 for coming to our school and giving us the chance to try and experience new things. Also thank you for giving T17 a chance to look behind the scenes of news presenting.

One last thank you to our Governing Council chairperson Michele D'Aloia for organising this exciting and wonderful experience for our school.
