Secondary 9/10

9/10 A

9/10A has had an incredibly busy term learning all about culture! We began learning about our home Australia, learning about Aboriginal Australian culture. From an Experience Day to CERES learning from Elder Aunty Kathy to making our very own damper, we have learned so much about Aboriginal culture. From there, we explored a variety of different cultures that make up the amazing multicultural community we live in! We took a foodie tour of the Queen Victoria Market tasting a variety of different cuisines and dabbled in some Bollywood Dancing! Through these hands-on experiences, students were able to experience first hand how unique every culture is and how much richer Australia is for everyone’s different histories.

9/10B

9/10B has had a great Term 2 continuing to learn about different cultures around the world. We looked at a different country in different continents of the world.  We compared India, Egypt and Australia and Mexican landscapes looking at the various categories of cuisine, entertainment, landmarks and cultures.   Our Experience Days had us exploring all over Melbourne observing various types of landscapes.  One of the highlights was the safari open bus tour at Cranbourne Gardens to see the red sand garden and to observe what the outback would be like.

Another highlight this term was going to IMAX to see the movie a Beautiful Planet.  It was amazing to see the world and all the various landscapes from such a perspective of a space station, plus the popcorn was delicious!

However, I believe, our best experience was Queen Victoria Market where we sampled various cuisines from around the world.  Students worked in small groups and selected a country of choice to research their food, and where they would buy it at the market.  Students selected an item to share with the rest of the class and explained what they liked about it.

It was lovely and a great feel to welcome parents and carers back into our learning spaces again for our open day.  We had a great turn out and it was fantastic to see so many parents take part in a special activity with their child.

This term we also participated in Reconciliation week, and we explored the different vocabulary of Respect and Family and learnt what Reconciliation means.  At the end of the week, we all came together to celebrate our differences and enjoyed the sounds of a didgeridoo.

9/10 C

This term we have become experts in Immigration, through reading ‘The Bone Sparrow’ and visiting the Immigration Museum we have learnt about the impact of immigration on people’s lives and what it might be like for those who arrived here in Australia. Our social competency unit has allowed us to build new friendships and grow the ones we already had. We enjoyed learning new skills in mathematics and have planned our own excursion using our knowledge of time. Congratulations to the students in 9/10C who have strived to achieve their personal goals and have enjoyed trying new things and sharing their creativity with others.

9/10E

This term 9/10E explored our cultural identity and how multiculturalism has impacted life in Australia today. In Literacy we studied ‘The Bone Sparrow’ to extend vocabulary, build comprehension and learn about refugees in Australia.  We wrote reports about countries and utilised persuasive techniques to change hearts and minds about topics of importance. One highlight this term was ‘Open Morning’ where we shared our learning and a cultural morning tea with our families. In Maths we used the skills of reading schedules, timetables and planning ‘how long’ things take to organise an impressive excursion to ArtVo.

9/10F

9/10F has continued to build on a successful first term in the classroom. Throughout our Discovery Unit we have investigated our own ancestries and explored how immigration has shaped the Australia we live in today. We have enjoyed making predictions on what will come next in our class novel ‘Raiders Peril’ and relating it to other video games we know and love. In Writing we have explored the difference between facts and opinions creating pieces that are both informative and persuasive. In Numeracy we have enjoyed the challenge of using our measurement skills on excursions to Queen Victoria Market and Northland Shopping Centre.

9/10G

Students in 9/10G have engaged and enjoyed a positive learning environment in Term 2. Students have participated in some fantastic classroom discussions, which made all students come out of their shells and all of their amazing personalities started to shine through. Students enjoyed the opportunity to plan their own excursion and used google maps to make sure the timings of the plan were all possible. The students also thoroughly enjoyed our persuasive unit, in which they were given the tools to argue effectively, and attempt to convince others to do what they wanted.

9/10H

Term 2 has been full of wonderful learning and growth for the students in 9/10H. In writing students have been exploring persuasive writing and have worked hard to create persuasive advertisements, including both print and video. During reading lessons students have engaged in a number of texts related to immigration. The graphic novel ‘Illegal’ has been a hit amongst the students. Maths has been a big highlight with the students planning their very own excursion to the Zoo. Another highlight includes an excursion to the city to visit the Immigration Museum. The students should be really proud of the work they have completed this semester! I am looking forward to seeing what they can achieve in Semester 2!

ALLIED HEALTH

Occupational Therapist: Nathalie Leane

This term we said goodbye to Erin as she started her maternity leave. Nathalie Leane has taken over as the new OT for 9/10 PreCAL classes. We have been building our understanding of emotions, self-regulation and the brain. We have also introduced a new typing program.

Speech Pathologist: Lauren Chan

This term we said best wishes to Lauren Short as she starts her maternity leave. Lauren Chan has stepped back in with the students to support their literacy sessions and community engagement skills on experience days. We have thoroughly enjoyed exploring cultures, especially talking about and tasting other foods.

Lauren Short (9/10 Speech Therapist) had her baby boy Oliver Charlie. Born at 36 weeks on 19th May weighing 2.7kg.

He was very eager to get Earth side arriving early and spent some time in the special care nursery but everyone is home now and making goals.

His big sister Charlotte is a big help to mum and dad with lots of cuddles.
