Term 2
"Time flies when you're having fun" refers simply to the phenomenon that time appears to pass more quickly when engaged in something we enjoy. It's a great way of explaining why Term 2 in Secondary 9/10 went so fast for our students.
We are proud of our section as they continued their great learning from Term 1. Our students enjoyed various fun and engaging experiences to complement their classroom learning. These include Police cyber safe incursion, 9/10 Open and Cultural Family Day celebration, Fit for Life, STEAM, Koorie Club Scartree Walk and Reconciliation Day celebrations. Our interschool sports team competed in hockey, soccer, and tennis. We are particularly proud of how our student's developed maturity when engaging with the community in activities outside our school.
In Literacy, students studied the novel 'The Bone Sparrow' by Zana Fraillon, a modern narrative set in an Australian immigration detention centre. Students used the themes from the book to build compelling arguments and create campaigns on a current-day issue. By combining an analysis of the narrative structure and language choices, students learnt about friendship, resilience, managing challenging situations and how persuasive texts influence audiences.
Our Maths focus for the term was identifying and improving our maths skills in 'real world' scenarios and equations. Students developed their multiplication, division, and measurement skills. Students also used their knowledge of reading clocks, duration of time, calendars, and timetables and created a class excursion they led. Students designed the excursion itinerary and location and set out to test their timings with great success.
As a part of the 9/10 A/B teaching and learning program, students participated in various experiences to enrich their learning of our Discovery Unit. Students travelled to Imax studios, Immigration Museum, CERES environment park and Queen Victoria Market.
Through our discovery Unit, the section visited the Melbourne Immigration Museum and worked with teams to uncover the personal settlement and migration stories through objects and artefacts. Students enjoyed exploring the Museum and hearing about the different journeys of people from around the world.
I want to offer our collective thanks for your support to your children, the staff and the school throughout the term. As always, a big thanks to our 9/10 teachers and support staff; they work very hard to ensure that all our students are cared for and above what is expected to provide an excellent environment for our students to learn and grow.
