Year 7

Term 2 Project:

“Videos for Change”

Driving Question: “How can you use film to raise awareness?”

Students have been asked this term to choose a social issue that they feel is important; something they think needs to change to help us connect in a more positive, meaningful way in society and in our communities. Students created a 60 second video on an issue for the Videos for Change competition. So, how will you change the world?

Hook Event:

It was lights, camera ACTION when our students experienced a week of Film Technique using a device designed by our very own Mr Herring! This included: planning a film; script writing; drawing a storyboard; camera close ups; sound technique and camera angles. Our students developed the required set of skills in collaboration with team members and developed an understanding of the different types of roles needed to produce a film such as Script Writer, Director, Filmer and Editor.

Our students also had access to NSW Department of Education STEM T4L 360 Degree Cameras if they wished to use these tools / camera’s for their projects this term.

Social issues chosen by our students have included Body Shaming, Depression, Bullying and Anti Vaping / smoking just to name a few.

Year 7

Film Premiers!!!!

Congratulations to 7H, 7E, 7N, 7R and 7Y for their collective efforts in their teams in producing high quality films for their Video’s for Change Project. Our students have highlighted social issues that are important to them such as: Body Shaming, Anti-vaping / Anti-smoking, Anti-bullying, Discrimination, Racism and Environmental Issues. They have inspired change and ACTION that matters to them. One video has been highlighted at our Celebration Assembly - Body Shaming.

Year 8

Term 2 Project: “The Restaurant”

Driving Question: “How can we celebrate First Nation Culture?”

Hook Event:

Year 8 welcomed Jake Cassar at the beginning of the term and had the opportunity to be inspired and immersed in Indigenous Bush Foods by Jake.

Jake’s presentation was upbeat, interactive, engaging and entertaining! It included a comprehensive display of native and exotic plants as well as an in-depth description of some of the plants uses. Jake shared information on how to make rope from tree bark, fire from sticks, soap from Wattle leaves and much more.

Our Year 8’s then took this inspiration to find their voices to explore how they could celebrate First Nation Culture and the CREATION of a class First Nation Inspired Cookbook. The project encompassed key learning outcomes from Technology Mandatory, Language and English. Benchmarks were completed by all students as they progressed through their projects including:

  • A research task in a selected area of First Nation interest of our students including Indigenous Art, Song lines, The Dreaming, Food and The Preservation of Language to name a few.
  • A creative recipe DESIGN (procedural text) with components of an industry standard recipe is to include the following:
    • Name of recipe
    • Ingredients
    • Equipment
    • Method (in numerical order) - including cooking instructions.
    • Picture
    • Portion (serving size for ONE person)
    • Cooking technique (stir fry, boiling, baking, frying, cold meal, boiling)
    • Students had approximately 40 minutes to prepare and serve their meal.
  • Feature Article (How can cultural ideals, values and beliefs be expressed through language?) OR Artefact (An artifact is something you create to SUPPORT what you are doing. Artifacts relate to the work of your project and that will relate to First Nation People Language and or Culture.

Our students / Year 8 Classes, HOSTED their restaurants including preparation of meals, setting up of the restaurant and speaking to their guests their personally indigenous inspired meal and native ingredient, showing their article or artifact, and explaining how language shows cultural values.

Congratulations to ALL Year 8 for their innovative First Nation Recipe Designs, food products and presentation of their creatively designed meals!

They have all done a fantastic job!!

“Celebrating National Volunteers”

16th - 22nd May, 2022 Week

"Better Together"

In Term 2, we thanked our wonderful IBM PTech Mentors with Certificates of Appreciation. HKHS understands the time you take out of your busy work lives to support and guide our students. Mentoring aims to build confidence, develop resilience and character and to raise career aspirations. Thankyou! #WaveForVolunteers

Mentoring Program…….

This term, the P-Tech Mentoring Program has had a focus on “Self-Management”. Students had the opportunity to share and discuss with their mentors being organised and how to prioritise tasks, being on time, being accountable and adaptable and flexible in the workplace. Again, we thank our IBM P-Tech Mentors for their invaluable time with our students.

In Term 3, we are excited to share with our community that our Year 9 P-Tech students will be taking their first SITE Visit to Gosford Private Hospital. We will be taking a tour of the hospital to investigate the variety of departments in the hospital and listening to medical specialists and staff from the hospital sharing information about their careers and roles in the hospital.

Looking forward to sharing this with our wonderful Henry Kendall community as our P-Tech program strengthens with our Health Industry Partner, Health Care - Gosford Private Hospital.
