Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Another jam-packed week in the leadership centre! It was amazing to see so many students participating in the Water Safety Program, well done to all students for putting in a massive effort, and a special thanks to all of those at home for ensuring that students bring the necessary gear each day! The pool staff were very pleased with the conduct of the students and have even sent an email to the school to say how awesome everyone has been!

In Writing sessions last week, students were busy taking risks when creating a writing piece about their holidays. Some of the amazing pieces that we saw included holiday brochures, persuasive articles about why their time on holiday was so amazing, and procedures for how to have the best holiday. We are encouraging students to build their capacity to take risks and make mistakes in their learning! If you would like to find out more about risk-taking, please ask your child. Next week, students will begin to explore writing arguements for a debate. We have many exciting debate topics that will relate to the students Guided Inquiry investigations over the coming term.

In Reading, students participated in whole class lessons and each class began to read the novel “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” which is based on the true story of William Kamkwamba. Later in the week, students began to learn about the ongoing project that they will be working on in reading this term! Students will have the opportunity to create a website on a book or text of their choosing. The website that they create will be a  showcase of their understanding on the text and will aid others in further understanding the text. This week students were actively brainstorming different ideas that they would like to include on their website that best shows their understanding. We will continue to work on and develop these websites over the term before sharing them. These websites will be created using the Adobe Spark Pages app on iPad, so please ensure that your students have access to this app. If you have any questions about this please get in touch with your child’s classroom teacher.

During Mathematics sessions last week, students began to explore the order of operations and their use when solving complex multi-step problems. Students and teachers ran mini-focus conferences and began to explore how the order of operations can be utilised. Later in the week, students started to explore and experiment using the order of operations to solve open-ended worded problems. To solve these problems students also needed to utilise their knowledge of estimation and rounding.

For Guided Inquiry last week, the students were busy becoming immersed in the topic of ‘Starting a new civilisation’ and began to look at topics involving space exploration and the colonization of new planets. After the initial immersion day, students were able to pose questions that they had or aspects of this that they would like to investigate further throughout the coming learning unit. We can’t wait to see the investigations and research that students conduct!

Have a wonderful week,

The Leadership Centre Teachers
