Year 9s tackle world of business

Budding entrepreneurs in Year 9 turned their business ideas into reality on Wednesday 22 June with the launch of their Trading Day.

Students across all year groups flocked to the College Green at lunchtime to check out the range of products on offer, from organic body scrubs and movie screenings to cake-pops, cupcakes, meringues and cookies, as well as bracelets to support mental health awareness.

All profits made on the day were donated to local charity.

The event was the culmination of the term's work in Year 9 Business Studies, which provides students with enterprise skills in problem-solving, communication, teamwork and financial planning, as well as an insight into what it's like to run a business.

Crafty fashion with a twist

Year 3 Gumnuts have been using their creative abilities to design clothing from recycled materials.

The activity, which formed part of their unit on design and technology, saw the students split into two groups to design and create a full outfit for their mannequin.

The groups were given three hours to work through multiple design problems and complete their final piece.

They then presented their designs to Mr Messer, Mrs Wilson-Haffenden, Mrs Knight and Mrs Holborow to explain the design process and how they overcame any obstacles along the way.

The students were very proud of the finished products and learnt a lot from the experience.

Hooray for mail day!

Mail day is always a good day—just ask our Year 3-6 pen pal participants, who have found a little bit of happiness in their classes this week.

The students have been delighted to receive some beautiful and thoughtfully handwritten letters from their alumni friends, like those pictured below, which have been packaged with love and care.

The SMC pen pal program is bringing much joy to all participants, and it has been a pleasure to see such special cross-generational friendships blossom over the past few months.

SMC gets shorty for a great cause

On Tuesday 21 June, St Mary's College students and staff braved the cold and braved the conversation, donning shorts on the shortest day of the year for SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY Shorts Day.

It was fantastic to see so many members of our community wear their shorts to school in a show of solidarity for the campaign, which shines a light on the importance of prioritising our mental health.

It recognises that while talking about mental health may be uncomfortable (much like wearing shorts in winter!), it can help break down the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide.

As the Prefects' chosen charity for 2022, all money raised on the day will support SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY's valuable work in the community.

Mini feast packs a punch!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday 17 June for our first Mini Winter Feast and major community event for the year. It was fantastic to have our families all together to celebrate the magic of winter in Hobart (on a not too frosty night!).

Food, music, colour and light spilled across the College Green, with guests soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying a meal, warming drinks, a light show and live entertainment. Click here to view photos from the night.

As our older students and their parents/carers mingled under the night sky, our Year 3-6 disco-goers took to the Nagle Centre to carve up the dance floor, where technicolour lights and a limbo set-up provided endless fun and excitement.

A special thank you to Phil Shanny, Jono Brimfield, Heidi Mirtl, Jackie and the team from Puddleduck Vineyard and our amazing volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you! Thanks also to our staff, students, Maintenance team and all who contributed to the event.

Celebrating diversity at SMC

SMC families from diverse backgrounds and walks of life gathered at the College recently for a delicious afternoon tea held in celebration of Refugee Week (19-25 June).

It was a privilege to host the event this year on behalf of Catholic Education Tasmania. We are incredibly grateful to all guests for their contributions and thank everyone who bravely shared the story of their home country with us.

Thank you to our Lantern team, Catholic Education Tasmania and all who supported the event.
