Educación Física y Salud

Foundation/1

In the past weeks, the weather has been nice enough on Wednesdays to allow our PE classes to happen outside the classroom and our students in Foundation and Year 1 are so grateful! They have been further developing his lanzar (throwing) and coger/atrapar (catching) skills using tennis and foxtail balls. They have been introduced to a wide range of new equipment such as tennis nets, soccer goals and hoops. These were used to practise both underarm and overarm throws and understand the difference between them. Throughout these activities, they were encouraged to increase the effectivity of their throwing and catching by actively communicating and interacting with their peers.

The focus of our last Wednesday session was on identifying people and actions that keep themselves safe and healthy as well as practising strategies that they can use when they need help with a task, problem or situation at home and/or at school. They took part in a fun class activity where they had to identify the danger in different case scenarios and provide an alternative to avoid the danger.

We look forward to celebrating the “Festival del Sol” from Perú in PE next week, where they will get involved in some adapted Peruvian ball games!

Grades 2/3

The focus of PE classes for Year 2 and 3 students in the past weeks has been in learning basketball skills. Some students have been practising botar (bouncing) a basketball effectively, whereas advanced students were introduced to more complex dribbling skills with both hands. They also learned different type of passes and how to link these with botar in adapted mini games. In the last two classes of our basketball program, they had the opportunity to practise lanzamientos (shooting) at small goals and participated in group activities where they had to collaborate and communicate to achieve a goal.

Our students in Year 2 and 3 have been excited to acquire new movement skills working with a ball. This will help them engage in other sports that require the use of some of these skills such as handball and footy.

Grades 4-6

The grade 456’s have been learning advanced baloncesto (basketball) skills and how to link these effectively in real game scenarios. They developed more confidence on driblar (dribbling) and defender (defending) the ball from the opponent. They practised group attacking and defending strategies and learned how to modify the elements of time and space to become more effective as a team. As an introduction to a real game scenario, they had the opportunity to practise all skills in adapted games such as “Policías y ladrones” (cops and robbers in basketball) and “Break the mirror”.

On this week lesson, students have discussed what type of physical challenges they would like to perform next week in the Warachicuy as part of our cultural week. The Warachicuy was an Inca rite of passage from childhood to adulthood where participants had to pass several physical tests. This event will help them appreciate and acknowledge the varieties of physical activities in other countries and communities.
