What is 'Respectful Relationships'?

The Royal Commission into Family Violence identified the critical role that schools and early childhood education have in creating a culture of respect. Respectful Relationships is about addressing family violence through education, in an effort to change the story of family violence for future generations.

Respectful Relationships education has become a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from foundation to Year 12 since its inception in 2016. The Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million to deliver Respectful Relationships education within all government, catholic and many independent schools. Parkdale Secondary College will be supported to review their practices and policies so that we can best model respectful relationships across the whole school community.

When young people build positive relationships with their teachers and peers, they feel safer and happier at school. We also know that through modelling positive behaviours within our college, we can increase a young person’s sense of social connectedness and belonging, resulting in better health and academic outcomes.

Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. To view Parkdale Secondary College’s Statement of Commitment to the Respectful Relationships initiative, you can visit the college website. Further information about Respectful Relationships is also available on the Department of Education and Training website: www.education.vic.gov.au/respectfulrelationships.
