Robotics Club

A disaster has occurred and a robot needs to be dispatched to rescue a victim trapped in a rescue capsule in the middle of a toxic chemical spill. This is no ordinary robot. It needs to follow a path, navigate around obstacles, get over debris and negotiate intersections in order to rescue the capsule on its own; remote control is not possible.

Since 2013 Glen Eira College has been sending teams to participate in RoboCup Junior competitions. The Rescue division is one of the more popular divisions because it is accessible to the absolute beginner, yet still provides challenges for those with more experience. Between now and the competition day, students in Robotics Club will build and rebuild, program and reprogram their robots many times in trying to find the best solution.

2022 is looking to be an exciting year for RoboCup Junior Victoria. After two years with no local competitions and no chance to travel, RCJV is planning a full slate of competitions around the state with the Melbourne regional event to be held early in term 3 and the Victorian state championships to be held late in term 3.

This year Glen Eira College is also looking to take teams to the RoboCup Junior Australia national championships to be held at the start of term 4 in Adelaide (keep your eyes open for more information on this).

Robotics Club is held after school every Wednesday in Room 8. Students who are not able to stay after school on Wednesday can join the Digital Makers & Coding Club Thursday at lunchtime to work on their robots.

For other club and extracurricular opportunities students should check the Clubs & Activities page on the GEC Hub (https://sites.google.com/education.vic.gov.au/gec-hub/clubs-activities).
