PDHPE

Welcome to PDHPE for Term 3 at Mater Dei 2019. Staff and students have been very productive already and look forward to an energetic and rewarding term ahead.

Year 7

Year 7 have begun this term participating in a practical unit called Newcombe Ball as part of their court games unit. Our focus in practical lessons within PDHPE is continuing to develop a games sense approach to these sports to apply technical and tactical skills in dynamic activities.

Within practical lessons, students have also had the opportunity to participate will students within their Year level across different classes in some competitive matches of European Handball. Teams have been playing in a Round Robin format against 10 teams in this competition.

Inside the classroom, Year 7 have started working through a unit of work focusing on Healthy Food Choices in which they will take a strengths based approach in looking at the food choices and their options as a young person in 2019.

Year 8

Year 8 have recently started investigating the unit, Harm Minimisation. Throughout this term students will recognise and minimise the risks associated with causing harm and ways to support themselves with issues such as Sexual Health and Drug and Alcohol awareness. These issues are extremely relevant as students move through adolescents and parents are encouraged to view and read through their child’s work during this time.

In practical lessons students have been completing activities in Gymnastics settings in the areas of balance, landing, jumping and formations.

Year 9

Year 9 PDHPE will be participating in a combined Touch Football and Oztag invasion games unit during Term 3, participating in a range of matches and small sided activities whilst learning new skills with our games sense approach to learning.

In the classroom, students have begun a new unit with the new K-10 PDHPE syllabus called Protecting Myself. Within this unit, students will critique contextual factors, attitudes and behaviours to effectively promote health, safety and wellbeing relevant to this stage in their lives. They will also develop and apply self-management skills to effectively manage complex situations.
