Religious Education

All students attending St Louis de Montfort's Aspendale have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is a fundamental responsibility of all within our school.

I am incredibly saddened to see continued reporting of the devastation and suffering caused by the war In the Ukraine.  There have been over 1,500 civilian casualties including 42 children killed in the Ukraine so far. According to the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR), over 3 million people have fled Ukraine into neighbouring countries (mainly to Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania), with thousands more having to leave their homes inside Ukraine. Many of those who have fled are women and children, having to leave behind their loved ones. My mind is filled with photos I’ve seen of tanks rolling into cities, of a Ukrainian man weeping over his dying son, of fathers farewelling their families not knowing if they will ever see each other again, of mothers and babies crammed into subway stations, of a Ukrainian soldier’s funeral. The contrast between my safe home and the war raging 12,000km away feels overwhelming. I feel helpless. There is little that most ordinary people here can do, besides donate money and pray.

Led by Georgia.A, Gabe.P and Luciana.A, we are continuing our daily Praying of the Rosary for Peace in the Ukraine, many students in their classrooms, are also praying for peace in our world..

Caritas-Spes, a charity of the Religious Mission of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, provides meals for people waiting to cross the border into Poland.

The Caritas Organisation has many people working on the ground to help the people of war torn countries providing for their specific needs: from water and food; to shelter and clothing; to medicine and psychological support.

Caritas Poland has set up tents near the Ukraine border, which serve as a meeting point and place to contact relatives and friends where refugees receive a warm meal. A warm meal, after days on the run, often helps people to regain some hope. This is why Caritas Poland staff have called the tents, ‘tents of hope’.

We believe it is our duty to reach out as one Catholic family with kindness and compassion to our sisters and brothers wherever they are. We are strongly compelled to respond in Ukraine,  donating in your Caritas Boxes is another way we can support those in need. So please give generously!

A Prayer for Hope and Peace

Heavenly father, we  are your humble servants,

We come before you today in need of hope.

We need hope for a calm and joyful future.

We need hope for love and kindness.

We pray for peace and safety.

Some say that the sky is at its

darkest just before the light.

We pray that this is true, for today seems stormy and dim.

We need your light, Lord, in every way.

We pray to be filled with your light.

Help us to walk in your light, and live

our lives in faith and service.

In your name we pray, Amen.
