Term 1

Visual Art 

The Term 1 Unit of Inquiry is called “The Art and Culture of India” which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- 'How We Organise Ourselves'. The Unit focuses on cultural celebrations, traditional design, architecture and how the vast and evolving country of India embraces these into the future.  

 

Students participate in- 

  • Drawing Mehndi- Henna hand patterns. This involves detailed drawing designs within the outline of their hand. They paint backgrounds inspired by the colours of India, demonstrating controlled painting skills and detailed illustration skills using pattern and tone. 
  • Creating Ceramic Palaces inspired by the architecture of India. They use ceramic skills and knowledge of form and function. 
  • Constructing Paper Sculptures with layers, colour and shape inspired by the Holi festival. They depict knowledge of balance and connection using colour, shape and sculptural skill.

Focus

Working together as a group showing tolerance and respect for others. Demonstrating open-mindedness and caring for each other to connect with one another as a team or individually as well as listening to the teacher and being respectful of how activities are performed in PE classes.

Refine the Fundamental Motor Skills of Throwing, Catching and Striking previously learnt, to perform more complex motor skills. These skills will be used in Modified Cricket Games along with some strategies to improve game performance.  We will also participate in a 

fun hockey skills clinic.

PYP Unit Of Inquiry - SHARING THE PLANET 

ALL CHILDREN HAVE RIGHTS REGARDLESS OF WHO THEY ARE: 

Line of inquiry: The similarities and differences between a right and a responsibility. 

  

 

Students will be able to:  

  • Understand how Japanese do physical exercise to start a day. 
  • Do Radio TAISO (a Japanese exercise). 
  • Describe what they did over the holidays using an adjective; OMOSHIROI DES (fun). 
  • Spell characters in the right stroke order. 
  • Spell their name in Katakana. 
  • Say greeting/classroom words (revision plus new words such as ITTE and KAITE). 
  • Understand how/ why Japanese people celebrate SETSUBUN festival. 
  • Say names of face parts. (KAO, ME, HANA, MIMI, KUCHI) 
  • Describe a SETSUBUN mask using adjectives. (OOKII ME, CHIISAI KUCHI, etc) 
  • Play the Japanese happy face game. 
  • Tell what kind of school rules Japanese children have in Japan. And tell why. 

Library  

The Year 4 students are encouraged to borrow books from the Library. The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation. 

The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information 

 

Music Program 

 

PYP Unit Of Inquiry:   Sharing The Planet – All Children Have Rights Regardless of Who They Are.   

 

Focus: to explore music that encourages students to have a voice, be respectful and celebrate multicultural music.  

 

 

 

 

 

The students will

  • Create a class playlist to celebrate and explore the diverse musical genres within the classroom. 
  • Explore the playlist songs – expanding musical knowledge by identifying tempos, rhythms, dynamics and pitches within the songs.  
  • Work on singing technique, explore how different dynamics can change the mood of the song.  
  • Each week we will have a different song to study to build up knowledge of musical elements and repertoire which align with the PYP UOI. Highlights include: Roar, Fight Song, A Million Dreams, Surface Pressure.  
  • Explore music that emphasizes the PYP Unit Of Inquiry of student voice – being a universal citizen. Celebrating music from around the world – exploring music as a universal language which mirrors the PYP communicator focus.  
  • Aligned with Wellbeing Week the students have explored the importance of being respectful and celebrating their unique traits and cultures. This has been mirrored in the music performed in class: Over the Rainbow, Titanium, This Is Me.
