In culture studies over the last few weeks, the students have continued to learn about Chinese culture. The students have explored facts about China including; its capital city, that China is the largest population in the world, The Great Wall of China, the giant pandas, clothes, food, China’s inventions like the kite, tea, paper, money, printing, and fireworks just to name a few. Students also coloured the flag, learnt to write Chinese characters of numbers 1 to 10 and everyday words. Students were introduced to learning how to use chopsticks by picking up small materials that represent Chinese food. All throughout these weeks students have had the opportunity to create Chinese art and crafts, for example: making a Chinese dragon kite, a panda face (out of paper bowls) a Chinese folded paper fan, tangram puzzle pictures. They were able to design their own their Chinese clothes and a bowl of fired noodles which were made from craft materials. I am so proud of all the LePage students on how they have embraced culture studies and how they are respecting and loving to learn about different cultures around the world and within Australia.
In Visual Arts over the last few weeks, students continue to focus on the skill of drawing by using different materials such as coloured markers, pencils, crayons and oil pastels as well as our ongoing focus on the different art elements of line, colour, shape, space, pattern and with introduction of texture.
Foundation students listened to the story ‘ish’, where they created their own ‘ish’ drawings. This allowed students to understand that everyone draws differently and that is ok, because they are your own drawings, and you should be proud of your own drawings.
Year 1/2 ‘s worked on drawing an animal and used different types of textures to create a print by rubbing the oil pastel or crayon over the textured material.
Year 3/4’s also created an animal drawing using the textured rubbing technique, with a textured background.
Year 5/6 students were introduced on how to draw a self-portrait using the correct proportion of the face
Health and PE
Over the past two week in health we have moved from exploring our own and others emotions, to personal character strengths. These have included things such as hardworking, honesty, fairness, kindness and many more. We have come to understand that by using these character strengths we are caring about ourselves and others. I am encouraging students to consider these positive character strengths to help them achieve great things in class, in the playground and at home to have respectful and wonderful relationships with their peers, friends and family
.In PE, our Prep and ½ classes have had a focus on fundamental skills. We have been focusing on using a correct running technique to improve our running to be more efficient and effective. The key points have been on looking straight ahead, pumping our arms, high knees and bottom flicks. I have also been working with the students to understand the correct skipping skills. The students have loved doing our running circuits and running games.
In our upper years grade 3-6, students have been introduced to the sport of volleyball. We have started developing the skills of setting and spiking the ball. Students have worked together to set the ball to their partner who is able to spike it to their friends. Students are loving learning these new skills, although it can be challenging at times to get these skills right.
Interschool SportsRound 3 and 4 saw us play against OLA and Kingston Heath. The girls have been playing so great and had another narrow loss in round three, 14-11 but had their first win against Kingston Heath in Round 4 by one run. Tara Tilly again keeps smashing home runs with 2 against OLA and 3 against Kingston Heath. However, all the girls keep continuing to get home and they are improving each week. The most pleasing thing is their team work and sportsmanship.
The boys continue to have very strong performances, having a 21-7 win against OLA and a 19-9 win against Kingston Heath. Many of the boys have hit a home run but all boys have got home at some stage contributing to the win. The encouragement has been amazing with everyone cheering each other along. They are all working hard to get ready for the lightning premiership in a few weeks time.
School Swimming Program Swimming program notices were sent out a few weeks ago, and the cut off is next Friday 18th. Please return your child’s permission notice and the payment by next Friday, or your child will not be able to participate in the program and miss out on a great social event with their friends.
Thanks, Jarrod Bradley PE/Health/Sports Coordinator
