Emily Murcott - Wellbeing Literacy Leader

So far this year, each class has focussed on learning about friendships, and strategies on how to respond to situations that crop up in our day-to-day lives. They have learned to consider where their friendships sit within the Friend-o-meter. Are they healthy or unhealthy? Then, what options do they have to move forward?  Is this bump in their friendship an example of a Friendship Fire or is someone being Mean on Purpose? Please, if you would like to learn more about what these phrases or words mean ask your children or check out the URSTRONG parent web pages.

We believe that empowering our students with these skills will create a culture of kindness at our school and we hope that, together, we can support your children to have healthy, feel-good friendships.

So, it is no surprise that we have also been focussing on Kindness. Staff have been acknowledging students who have been kind to others by asking them to drop a button in a class jar.  I was teaching in 1MO yesterday afternoon and Georgia R kindly offered to try to tie another student's shoelaces for him, so I acknowledged this kindness and asked her to add a button to the jar.

Jimmy noticed a peer's water bottle had been knocked over, so he stood it up. Another example of kindness was shown, and he too added a button to the jar.  I believe that the class added about 8 buttons to the class jar during a short time and it was received well.

I encourage all families to try this concept at home. When the jar is full, why not do something as a family to celebrate how kind everyone has been. Maybe have a dress-up dinner to celebrate, have a movie night, play a board game together.

Please share your stories and photos with me I'd love to hear and see your progress. Email me at emily.murcott@education.vic.gov.au

I would like to acknowledge 2 acts of kindness that have been noticed by the administration staff:

  • Lochie B showed kindness by supporting his sister when she was feeling sad. Well done Lochie.
  • Lee-Anne Izzard bought morning tea down to the office staff because they were not able to make it to the special morning tea that was held in the Boorai. So thoughtful Lee-Anne.
