Year 6 Term 3

 

This term we have started the term planning and preparing for our Year Six PYP Exhibition. We look forward to the students presenting their investigations into technology and its impact on various areas of society and the environment.

Literacy

Reading

Students will continue to review reading comprehension strategies. They will focus on Making Predictions, Finding Word Meaning in Context, Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences, Distinguishing between Fact and Opinion, Identifying Author’s Purpose, Interpreting Figurative Language and Summarising. 

 

Writing

Students will continue to develop strategies for writing using the 6 Writing Traits with the focus this term on ‘Ideas’. The ideas trait encompasses the content of a piece – its central message and the details that support the message. They will work on:

  • Finding a Topic
  • Focusing the Topic
  • Developing the Topic
  • Using Details

Spelling

We continue to incorporate SMART Spelling words into our Spelling lists, as well as Unit of Inquiry specific vocabulary.

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

In Maths, students will revise and expand their knowledge of the relationship between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. They will explore the use of brackets and order of operations to write number sentences as well as developing their understanding of Algebra.

 

Measurement and Geometry

Students will develop their understanding of the following concepts throughout the term:

  • Cartesian Coordinates
  • Measure, calculate and compare elapsed time
  • Interpret and use timetables
  • Converting between common metric units

Statistics and Probability

In Statistics and Probability, students will apply their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages to describe probabilities. They will develop their knowledge of the vocabulary used in probability and conduct chance experiments using appropriate digital technologies.

 

Problem Solving

Students will continue to develop their problem solving skills of Drawing a Diagram, Drawing a Table, Acting it Out, Guess and Check, Creating an Organised List and Looking for a Pattern. They will apply these skills through weekly targeted lessons.

 

Early Morning Maths

Early Morning Maths is continuing and students are expected to take responsibility for their learning and actively pursue strategies to assist their progress or further their understandings of a concept. The Year 6 Teachers offer before school maths classes once a week on a Wednesday from 8.30 – 9.00am.  All students are invited to participate.

Year Six Wellbeing

Throughout Term 3, Students will  participate in our Wellbeing Wednesday sessions. The CyberSafety Project and Resilience Project continues on a regular basis with the focus on Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.
