Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy

In Kindergarten students are involved in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. At Fairvale we use a program called InitiaLit to provide literacy experiences through explicit phonics instruction. Students engage in reading and writing lessons in small groups, meeting each student's specific learning needs. Students learn phonological awareness skills before learning letter sounds and names. Drawing pictures is an important part of the writing process in Kindergarten. We begin writing as soon as students start school, working on writing their letters correctly and how to hold a pencil.

Numeracy

Numeracy in Kindergarten involves the use of a range of different materials like counters, dice and cards, to help students build an understanding of numbers. Throughout the year, students will also learn about other mathematical strands such as creating patterns, measuring objects and different types of shapes.
