From the Head of Sport

Over recent years I have had to refer back to the ISA Code of Conduct for players, coaches and spectators. Rather than do that this week I would like all those involved in BMGS sport to think about the image that we portray to others during our sporting endeavours, particularly focusing on good sportsmanship.

Sportsmanship comes in many forms and helps make competitive games fun and enjoyable. Being a good sport fosters good habits and positive life skills both on and off the field, and is an important life skill for people of all ages.

What Is Sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship is when competitors or viewers of competitive events treat one another with respect and exhibit appropriate behaviour. Good sportsmanship means being fair and ethical to those you’re playing with - both your teammates and the opponents.

Sportsmanship can also apply to spectators. Sportsmanship doesn’t mean going easy on opponents but playing a clean game. Being a good sport means your conduct is polite and gracious, and that you avoid disrespecting others during game time.

As the winter season comes to a close I would like the BMGS sporting community to focus on the following key aspects of sportsmanship:

  1. Be supportive
  2. Have a positive attitude
  3. Be respectful
  4. Be willing to learn
  5. Practice self-control

Good luck to all our teams this week and I look forward to hearing of your successes over the weekend.

Orienteering Update

All students were emailed information regarding the upcoming Orienteering competition. It is anticipated that we will be running another Friday afternoon training in the leadup to this event. The date for this training will be advised shortly.

Please note that this competition is not restricted to Senior School students so those Junior School students who have been involved in the orienteering program are welcome to enter in this competition.

ISA Athletics

The ISA Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday, 13th September. The BMGS team will be posted on the Sports Office noticeboard next week. Please ensure you let me know if you are unavailable for all the events that you have qualified for.

Any students who currently participate in Triple Jump or Hurdle events through Little Athletics can come and see me at the Sports Office for further information.

2022 NSWPSSA/All Schools Cross Country

Three BMGS students bound for the National Titles!

Last Friday, three BMGS students made their next journey down to Eastern Creek to take part in the 2022, NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships. This time to test themselves against the best runners from all three associations across the state.

Once again, the congested start lines were brimming with anywhere between 70 - 100+ runners vying for a place on the NSW XC team to compete at the Nation Titles, to be held next month in Adelaide.

All three of the BMGS competitors ran outstanding races and have all qualified to represent NSW next month in Adelaide. So a HUGE congratulations to Casper Larkin (Year 11), Keeden Harrison (Year 7) and Tasman Harrison (Year 4) for these outstanding results. We wish all the boys best of luck in Adelaide.

Netball

BMGS Firsts defeated St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 61-50

Eliza’s defence was outstanding, Alana played her best game of the season, Olivia dropped shots in from everywhere, Mia ran herself to a standstill, Jess was strong and dominant at Center, Zoe put up with unwanted attention from her opposition player and retained her composure to anchor the shooting circle, Brynn was the ultimate team player, Tarana tightened her defence in the second half and caused havoc  for the opposition, and Ellen was an enforcer (with a smile) in defence.  This was another showing of how magnificently these girls can play together.

BMGS Junior E

What a fantastic game! The girls finally beat their own personal best and hit double digits. Excellent shooting from Arrow and Amelie, a cracking defence from Sasha, Olivia, Coco and Jess and great Centre work from Tessa and Sophia. With a full team these girls worked together and encouraged each other to play their best. This game was proof of just how far the girls have come and the effort that they have put into training and improving their skills. Congratulations and a fantastic game, girls!

BMGS Juniors drew with Central Coast Grammar School, 0-0

On Saturday the Juniors played Central Coach Grammar School in a tightly contested competition. Both teams played a fairly defensive game, with an extra sweeper employed to clean up attacking ball. Due to illness this week we were a few players short, so we want to say a special thank you to Ivy, Clem and Eladie who helped us out in defence. Eladie was particularly strong in goals as our GK and deflected many a goal. Our Wings also had good games, with an increased knowledge of positioning starting to show some good results. Although we didn't get many chances to attack the opposition goal, we did get a bit of practice in defending our short corner. Soraya was particularly effective in the short corner, as our team's short corner runner. She often prevented a shot at goal by taking the ball of the receiver just as it arrived. Overall, the team were happy with a 0-0 draw against a traditionally difficult team.

BMGS 1st XI defeated Central Coast Grammar school, 4-0

This game was an incredible win for the girls against Central Coast, putting us on top of the leaderboard. It was a tiring game for all of us as we had no subs, but we made it work and kept communicating as a team in order to succeed in this game. Right from the hit off, the girls played consistently, applying pressure to the opposition with majority of the play being in the other team's goal in the first half. Our Forwards and Mids worked hard to keep the ball in offence, leading to an outstanding amount of offensive short corners and some incredible goals from our captain Kat, putting us at 4-0 by the end of the game. We played an amazing game this week and remain motivated and excited for the remainder of the season ahead. Well done girls!!
