JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS

Our Junior School Sports will be held later in the school year when the weather has improved and our oval has been completed. Unfortunately we cannot delay the senior sports as we need to make nominations to compete in the district and state athletic competitions.

OVAL UPDATE

After a long wait we are finally able to move forward with the redevelopment of the school oval. I am meeting with the architects this week for a final review of the plans. Hopefully, there will be lots of action happening in the next few weeks! Again we say a huge thank you to everyone for their patience and co-operation as this development has unfolded.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY - Numeracy

Last Monday Rollins staff spent the day working on developing a more progressive and innovative mindset when teaching numeracy. It was an extremely well planned day with all staff actively involved.

Our main presenter was Kerryn Driscoll (Numeracy Consultant form the Maths Association in Melbourne). I would like to thank Lachie Wright (Rollins Numeracy Leader) for all his work in preparing for this day. A huge thank you to our parent community for their support in allowing our staff the opportunity to further develop their teaching and learning skills. I know student free days are sometimes very difficult to organise for parents- your support is very much appreciated.

The last Professional Learning day for our school will be on Monday July 15th. We purposefully planned this to coincide with the school holidays. It will be the first day of the Term 3 school term. Hopefully this is less disruptive to parents and may allow those who have been holidaying away a chance to return when traffic is less congested or coincide with parent RDO’s.  This Professional Learning day will focus on staff upskilling in the area of Literacy data analysis and planning. We are very fortunate to have Kandice Bell, the Regional School Improvement Leader conducting this day. Many thanks to Daniel Chittenden (Literacy Learning Specialist) for his work in organising this day.

STUDENT REPORTS

The Mid-year reports will be available to parents on COMPASS on Wednesday 26th June at 3.30pm.The reports provide a snapshot of the progress your child has made in each of the curriculum areas covered in the first half of the year. Teacher assessments are based on a wide variety of tools that we use to determine your child’s progress. The reports should provide an accurate summary of how your child is currently performing.

If you have any problems with COMPASS please contact Sandy in the office before this date so you will be able to access your child’s report. She is more than willing to help you.

NAPLAN

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our teachers and students on the way they have prepared for the NAPLAN National Testing Program, which they took part in recently. Our Year 3 and 5 students worked through a range of literacy and numeracy tests and we were very pleased with the level of commitment and endeavour they showed. I think that the work and preparation that has gone into building student knowledge, while also managing the pressure of a test situation, has been outstanding. The results for these tests are not usually available to schools and parents until around the middle of Term 3. Let’s hope that the students’ results reflect the huge amount of effort that went into preparation. Great job everyone.

GA GA PIT

The Ga Ga pit is nearly there! The major works have been completed and we are just waiting on the synthetic grass to be laid. The senior students have been really excited and can’t wait to try it out. If you need to know how this game works log on to YouTube and all will be revealed! We first learnt about this pit when the Grade 5/6 were at camp last year- every free minute was spent in the Ga Ga pit!

EMERGENCY EVACUATION/INTERNAL LOCKDOWN PRACTICE

It is a Department of Education policy that schools should regularly rehearse and exercise emergency procedures, quarterly per annum, completing a partial or full test under a variety of emergency scenarios. Schools should consider:

  • notification and reporting procedures
  • roles and responsibilities of nominated personnel
  • building fire response procedures
  • offsite and onsite evacuation
  • shelter in place/lock down/ lockout alternatives
  • communications within the school and to the school community
  • emergency services liaison.

At Rollins we  have regular rehearsal evacuations every term to ensure that we are compliant with this policy. One such rehearsal will be this Friday. It will be an internal lockdown. Students have been prepped on what is happening and why. They have been totally assured that this is a rehearsal only. Please chat to your child about this procedure and reassure them it is a procedure that occurs in all businesses, corporations and institutions.

Don’t be alarmed if your child informs you that they had to move to a position out of sight of the windows e.g. under the table.

ROLLINS SCHOOL CHOIR 2019

Rehearsals for the choir will begin on Friday May 31st at lunchtime. The choir is open to students in Grades 2 to 6. It is important that children who would like to sing in the choir attend rehearsals each week – these will be normally be in the lunch break and occasionally in school time nearer to the concert date.

There are two concerts coming up – the Geelong Schools Music and Movement Festival, which is at Costa Hall in August and the Rollins School concert in September. Students who attend choir rehearsals regularly will be able to perform at these concerts. More details of the concerts will be available in the future to the students who join the choir.

THIS WEEK'S ASSEMBLY

3/4(Jack Day’s Class and half of Daniel’s Grade) performing this week. Daniel’s grade is split for the weekly music lesson hence half the grade will be performing this assembly and the other half will be part of the next music assembly performance. If your child is in Daniels’ grade please ask them if they are part of the performance this week.
