Meet Edison, Part Two

In ICT classes on Tuesday the Year 3/4 students enjoyed using Edison robots again. This week they created programs for their robots to follow using EdScratch which is a vertical block-based visual programming language based on Scratch. It allows students to program their robots to move, spin, beep, play musical notes, flash LED lights, sense obstacles, etc.

The students created their programs then downloaded these to Edison and watched what Edison did. Often, they found that they needed to edit their programs several times to make Edison do exactly what they wanted.  Much collaboration and problem-solving occurred. With Lego blocks some of the students creatively turned their robots into different shapes.

We’ve had a lot of fun learning with the robots.

What the Year 3/4 students say about Edison:

You can explore your imagination by telling Edison what to do in little steps.  Jake

Edison is fun and good for us to code. Delilah

It’s amazing and it's cool, because you can code.  Angelo

It’s fun to program. Olivia

Edison is fun to play with because it teaches us to code. Eugenia

It's fun to build LEGO onto Edison and build obstacle courses. Georgie

It’s interesting because it programs through the communication lead. Darcy

Edison is an awesome robot because you can use EdScratch to program what Edison's going to do. Caleb

It's so cute. It's like a little pet that you can program. Lucy

Edison can do a lot of things. It's really good at scanning barcodes. Hannah

Edison is fun because you can tell it what to do. It’s fun to build on with Lego.  You can explore what we might have in the future.  Marleen
